What (or more likely, who) was the cause?

He was given a truthful but blunt reply and he's flounced because of it.
Must admit, there's a couple of times when I've had to restrain myself from going Richard on him.

I assume it is the Wandsworth thread that tipped him over the edge?

Missed all this, what happened? Same here, I was cc’d into a PM thread with him last evening and he seemed quite happy with life here.

Without wishing to breach the confidentiality of the moderation surgery the poster in question came close to leaving a little while ago and was persuaded to remain on that occasion. My personal view is that the exchange which seems to have caused his departure now did not cross any boundaries but does underline that some people are more sensitive to criticism than others.

I won't miss his puns, but far from the most obnoxious person on here.
Unfortunately too many people see someone being sensitive as a reason to needle even harder, not as a reason to back off

My personal view is that the exchange which seems to have caused his departure now did not cross any boundaries but does underline that some people are more sensitive to criticism than others. Perhaps because they have reasons for being so, and if people stopped to think before piling in with abusive criticism, those reasons may be bleeding obvious - to his credit Richard Allen had figured it out and had backed off in the US politics and elections threads. But, with a minuscule number of exceptions, there is a vile bullying culture on this board that would not and should be allowed to go unchallenged. Sadly those of us who don’t rise to your exalted standards are frequently belittled, mocked and made to feel utterly inferior. I recall complaining about attacks on my disability to a previous admin team that led to a seven day suspension for the person concerned; however 99% of the posts on the Discussion of Moderator Actions thread were of the opinion that the poster’s contributions to the board were far too important to be lost even for seven days, and that pandering to my feelings was fascist like censorship (and that included so called colleagues in the Red room). You seem incapable and/or unwilling to recognise that some posters have issues that affect their abilities, or even come here to improve their knowledge, but are never made to feel welcome, just personally attacked in ways that put even the most ardent Jeremy Corbyn supporters on social media to shame. The fa t gwynthegriff doesn’t think the replies in the Wandsworth thread crossed any boundaries shows perfectly what the problem was. Please don’t waste your time replying, I’m uninstalling the App and disabling all notifications until Thursday night as I’m not in the right headspace to have a conversation that won’t result in my permanent ban, but perhaps you could pause for one nanosecond and consider how your language and attitudes discourage and intimidate people from contributing to conversations.

Amusing when posted by the rudest poster on here, and the only poster to respond to disagreement by threatening to expose another poster in order to adversely affect their life outside this board. A Brown received a permanent ban for less.

If I was him I’ll just not visit the site for a couple of weeks and that is it, seems like an overreaction.

Partly my fault - I don't normally engage with him, but when he actually stated he was attention seeking I lost my temper, but was scarcely abusive. There are some strange people on this site, and I'm not a psychiatrist.

I'm about a decade older than him and remember well the feeling of being lost and scared as you graduate from Oxford and realise that that fact isn't enough these days to give you an easy ticket through life.

There are some strange people on this site, and I'm not a psychiatrist. You don’t need to be to recognise an obvious health condition when it’s staring you in the face, something which he was happy to own up to; so his “attention seeking” was a very common manifestation of that.

Oh yawn. We can't go pussy footing around health conditions -- they could be undiagnosed, undisclosed, or just used by obnoxious individuals as a shield for their disgraceful behaviour. People should grow the fuck up and take responsibility for their own wellbeing. (And I say that as someone who could play sob stories about health conditions, but does not, because I've got a basic sense of self-respect.)
