Corby Eat Ward (no surprise here): Lab 1063 Con 252 BNP 141 LibD 37 Although the source seems to think it's a Labour Gain No surprise perhaps, but a good result for Labour and a poor outcome for the BNP who worked the patch quite hard. The Labour vote share appears to be 6.1% up on May 2011, so should be pretty happy in a ward like this in a very marginal Parliamentary constituency.

The Waltham Forest result stands out as notably good for the Tories - unlike most recent by-election results (last night's included)
Any explanations??

Partial guesses - the GE turnout in 2010 clearly gave Labour a vote share they get nowhere close to matching at other times. There's actually been a 7.5% swing to Labour since the 2009 by-election, which is more in line with what you'd expect. I also wonder whether the local conservative party is just muich better organised and resourced than the others.

Well, they very probably are in the Chingford part (where this ward is) - it is notable they were able to hold most of their seats here even in their low-water marks of 1990/94/98. Waltham Forest is a notably polarised borough.

He's a Conservative councillor in Bradford. I don't think i'm 'outing' him in an unwelcome way. This is the name he uses on Twitter Ah, right...... Its just that there is already a "simoncooke" registered here, who was also logged in last night Same profile details as well - I'd say Simon had simply forgotton his details (not posted since Bradford West Bye) and reregistered if you hadn't said he was on last night in his former incarnation.. odd

A lot of people have been quoting loads of percentages in this thread, but without giving the actual results.

I would assume in the absence of anything extraordinary Louise Bagshawe will be publishing more Chick Lit from 2015 and Louise Mensch will possibly be seeking nomination for a safe Tory seat in 2020.
However the seat of Corby is incredibly polarised and ther are I think safe Tory wards in E Nthants to match the safe Labour bits of Corby. And probably with better turnout. So if the Tories lose say 30 seats to Labour (she is a new incumbent which is probably good for her) she would be in trouble.

This week's Sunday Times Magazine features an article about Essex which includes an account of the Larkswood by-election.
