In OTL, of course, the vote was lost by a single vote - there are plenty of ways this could be changed - Alf Broughton could be brought into the Palace grounds in an Ambulance, Gerry Fitt could decide to support the Government, Clement Freud could agree to the offer of a FOI act (or his train to London break down or be delayed).
I assume that in that case Callaghan would aim for an election in October 79 - how would he fare? Would the talks to revive the Scotland Act and the Wales Act work (they were unsuccessful in OTL, with the SNP forcing the vote rather than find a way to deliver devolution).

I think Callaghan said later he was planning to call the election for 7 June - coincident with the European Parliament election. Doubtful that the general shape of the result would have been much different.

So the election, in effect, was only brought forward by a month by the vote of no confidence if that is true. The Conservatives had been pushing for a date in April, however.

Its likely that Margaret Thatcher would still win (polling prior to the vote of no confidence were showing a comfortable win for the Conservatives). The LDs would still be plagued by Jeremy Thorpe's personal life and their short failed coalition with Labour. The SNP would also be damaged because most of them would vote with the Conservatives. Labour still don't have a majority and they would still struggle to govern. This and the 'Winter of discontent' compound together to ensure Labour's electoral defeat.

Yes, a more intriguing alternative scenario is likely "what if there had been no WoD?"
