Buchan later became Governor General of Canada, I think? Yes, from November 1935 until his death in February 1940. I was just Wikipedia-ing it

Yes, from November 1935 until his death in February 1940. I was just Wikipedia-ing it I already knew he was Governor General just before and in the early part of the Second World War but had to look up the precise dates as well.

Inspired by a day out with my elder daughter, the bonkers one with no work ethic, I am charge with coming up with a plan to fundamentally alter the constitutional make up of the UK. We have some general ideas, but would appreciate some help on the detail. House of Lords; We think that every county should have a senior Lord, a Duke for big important counties bearing the name of the county or the county town, such as Argyll, Fife, York, Lancaster, Norfolk, Cornwall. Smaller and lesser counties should also have a senior Lord, a Marquess, or Earl but his title would not be that of the county or County Town, it would be a lesser one such as his estates. Counties of course have numerous lesser Lords, Viscounts and Barons. Some name changing needs to go. the Marquess of Lothian can't be that, he needs to be Marquess of West Lothian, to avoid confusion with the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Hamilton needs to be Duke of Lanarkshire, the Duke of Atholl becomes the Duke of Perthshire. We think that they should pay a levy towards the cost of the upkeep of the monarchy, including the Monarchs good charitable works. We think Dukes, £10m pa, marquises £5m pa, Earls £2m pa, Viscounts £500k pa, Barons £100k pa. We think that Lords could opt to downgrade their title if they could no longer afford it, or apply to upgrade if they could afford it. All Lords would meet quarterly at Arundel Castle to debate issues of their choice without any binding consequences. They would also elect 50 of their number to sit in the HoL. they would also debate expulsion motions. eg, Lord Lucan might find that quite unfairly, he is found to have brought the game into disrepute. We think that titles need to be created ( ie sold) for overseas territories and states and provinces of Australia and Canada. There is more of this drunken nonsense this is still a good idea

Fees to inherit titles is rather reminiscent of the feudal duties charged on inheritance amoungst the aristocracy that were abolished I believe just before the civil war. They were generally unpopular.

I wonder what European country Ruritania would most resemble now. Austria? Hungary?
Will they be arguing about seats like Hentzau Banks, Strelsau Outer or Rassendyll & Darwen?

Anthony Hope (Hawkins) was the Liberal candidate for the Southern or Wycombe division of Buckinghamshire in the 1892 General Election. He lost.

With the aristocracy, and Parliament who felt it gave the monarch too much power and thus reduced his reliance on Parliament for approval of new taxes.
