There are two by-elections this week to the City of London Corporation.
In Tower ward two candidates are seeking to succeed Gerald Pulman. They are Lady Xuelin Li Bates and Anne Fairweather. Polling takes place today.
Lime Street ward was due to poll tomorrow, but Dominic Christian is the only candidate nominated to succeed Robert Howard and will be declared elected at the wardmote today.

The Tower ward contest is a proxy party political one as Anne Fairweather was a Labour candidate for the European Parliament in 2009 (third place in London, so a potentially winnable slot). She was at the centre of the row over 2014 selections when she wasn't even given an interview and the winnable slots filled with candidates promoted by various unions.

Similar to North East where Fay Tinnion was interviewed before being dumped. Not sure that's actually preferable.

Is Tower ward one of the shitty ones? I don't think any of the City wards really merits that description. Tower is not one of the five designated 'residential' wards; the bulk of the electorate are business voters. Only about one fifth are residential voters, and they live in private residential blocks.

Suggests a certain lack of familiarity with the City of London electorate in believing that they consist primarily of socialists. It would be nice, but I don't think it is so.

That was about as light as I could be, given that implying someone is a racist is generally considered a very grave accusation.
