Adrian I've seen your Lancs proposals. Crossing into Southport isn't necessary, i think West Lancs can be a seat on its own under current numbers. Ingol should remain in Preston, it was an ill fit when it was in Fylde; there's no reason to add it to such a large rural consistency as you do. That aside, I like much of what you've come up with. I prefer Southport going into West Lancs. it probably creates a better Southport seat, and avoids splitting Formby. I'd rather like to see it too, and it's what the NW LibDems proposed at the zombie review! Unfortunately Lancs doesn't need to borrow any wards from neighbours this time.....

"Lancs doesn't need to borrow any wards." This is very true, and it does go against my principles, but I decided in the end it was a reasonable price to pay for being able to use more of the district boundaries in Mid Lancs. (And for the Sefton/Knowsley/Liverpool reasons too.) In this sense I'm just agreeing with those on the forum who came up with a similar idea. As far as Ingol-in-Lunesdale is concerned, I did find various unsatisfactory ways of avoiding it, but in the end I decided that since part of Preston is currently in the North Lancs seat, and I already had a few wards from Preston borough in the seat, it was a reasonable compromise. Anyway, as usual I've put the plan out there in order to create discussion. ukelect.wordpress.com/2016/06/28/2018-review-lancashire/

Rather few ward splits by your standards Renaming Oldham East & Saddleworth to just "Oldham East" is about a pitchforky thing as it is possible to do, isn't it?

My plan dubs the two seats in the Borough of Oldham 'Chadderton and Failsworth' and 'Saddleworth and Medlock'. On reflection, I'm not sure the latter sounds quite right, but it does show that there's no need to mention Oldham in the names at all.

I disagree-Oldham is an actual town, not merely the name of a local authority. At least one of the constituencies should mention the Oldham name and this will almost certainly be the eastern one at least (Oldham & Saddleworth).

I'm in two or three minds about the naming business. When there was a poll on here a while back about naming conventions I said that I prefer to keep to them, but as I go along I'm becoming more "post-modern" in my approach, and think that the naming should mostly be left up to locals. My main caveat to that is that long names are a waste of breath, ink and bandwidth, so the BCE should prod people towards choosing shorter names if possible.

Adrian, I'd recommend that you stick to your guns on this one - the boundary goes virtually through the middle of Oldham and I'd support your instinct to keep the names as short and simple as possible.
The Hackney seats, in London, should likewise be shortened; the present names preserve the names of otherwise-forgotten boroughs that ceased to exist when the LCC became the GLC over half a century ago.

I'd support shortening Oldham West, but not Oldham East - Saddleworth is culturally different from Oldham and still thinks it's in a different county.

A compromise might be to call the seat "Oldham Saddleworth" (hyphenated perhaps?) - at least it's not 4 words.
