Horses for courses, isn't it? Some towns work well with doughnut arrangements. Not quite as full an answer as I had hoped David! Has our subscription to the premium service lapsed again?

Colchester works, York doesn't, in my opinion. On the contrary, I think the York Outer/York Central arrangement works rather well due to the particularly idiosyncratic way York's suburbs have expanded.

Why have doughnuts rather than a split on an East-West or North-South basis as has been the usual recourse? In this case, because there's nowhere in the Colchester seat that would go better with somewhere outside Colchester, and all the bits in the outer seat go at least as well together as they would with Colchester. East-west ordinarily works when the settlement concerned is rather bigger. I can't think of any cases off-hand where a town that is the right size for a seat is split, and even if that were pursued you'd need a stronger dividing line than you can find in Colchester. Mind you, it's not even a real doughnut, as you would rapidly and unpleasantly discover if you tried to walk from Fingringhoe to Wivenhoe.

I have come round to the idea of a 'doughnutted' Colchester because it is fairer on that city to have a neater and more compact constituency. Unfortunately the boundaries for the neighbouring seat in either case are rather untidy.
Chelmsford on the other hand...

A ridiculous proposal by Heidi Allen MP which seeks to avoid an unnecessary cross county seat between Herts and Cambs by instead having three unnecessary cross county seats (Herts/Essex, Essex/Cambs and Cambs/Beds) !

As you know, I've also suggested three cross-county seats in this region... and yet I find all of those combinations just as baffling as you do.

I was pleased to see that the commission accepted my counter-proposal for the Ipswich area.
I do sometimes wonder if they deliberately include a few nonsensical configurations in each region, just so they can 'correct' these in response to sensible and obvious counter-proposals and then claim to have listened and acted during the consultation process. It gives them a fantastic excuse for not tackling the more difficult or contentious proposals...

After all, if they do do what you're suggesting, it means they're choosing to waste an awful lot of people's time!

No change to boundaries in final recommendations.
Broadland renamed to Broadland and Fakenham Central Suffolk and North Ipswich renamed to Central Suffolk
