You can get plenty of objections to a plan that brings together two areas with shared interests, for fairly obvious reasons. But in any case, the proposal was to link Ely and Newmarket. There is a decent road connecting the two (though no train link, as Newmarket station is on the wrong branch), but there isn't a great degree of shared identity. Both are within Cambridge's economic orbit, but that doesn't mean they have strong links with each other.

I agree that the A142 is a perfectly acceptable road link between the two places. If anything, Newmarket is slightly more inside Cambridge's orbit than Ely is.

You're right, of course, that locals would be up in arms and that sales of pitchforks might well go through the roof in the area if such a thing were ever actually proposed by the Commission.

When the comments on the initial proposals are published, you might be lucky enough to find that someone has submitted a plan identical to yours that you can support.

In this region, I made the case for considering Rutland alongside Northamptonshire and against 'Loughborough and Rushcliffe South'. However, I was only completely happy with my proposals for Northants-Rutland, the 3 seats in Leicester, the 2 seats in NW Derbyshire plus Ashfield and Mansfield in Notts. The rest at times got ferociously untidy.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I had a couple of goes at Yorkshire between February and September and got stuck in both the Sheffield (as expected) and Hull areas. I assumed that the Commission would split a ward in Sheffield, but when they didn't I despaired and just never came back to that region.
Didn't manage a proposal for the North East either. To be fair, I've never been there in person, although I was at a family gathering at the weekend which contained a distant relative-by-marriage who grew up in Marske.

It'll be interesting to see how many people make the case for this arrangement. The initial report didn't even acknowledge Rutland as a (technically) separate county from Leicestershire, which may have increased the rate of pitchfork purchases in Oakham.

We also received a counter-proposal that suggested the Trent Valley ward of Gedling borough
be included in the Nottingham East and Carlton constituency. The proponent of this modification
indicated that changes to other constituencies as part of the revised proposals resulted in the
Trent Valley ward no longer having any road connections with the Sherwood constituency. (...) We are not modifying our proposed Nottingham East and Carlton, and Sherwood constituencies.
We are persuaded by evidence received that the inclusion of the Trent Valley ward in the
Nottingham East and Carlton constituency would better reflect the transport links in this area and

There seems to be a "not" too many just after the omission.

The Sherwood constituency should have been abolished-it is an incoherent constituency that was only ever created to give Nottinghamshire the extra constituency it was entitled to in 1983. Nottingham East and Gedling should have been expanded instead (Nottingham East towards the city centre of Nottingham and Gedling to the hinterland between Carlton and Newark).

I'm just glad we've not still got the oddity of seats called 'Derby North/South' but geographically split East/West.

Although there's going to be a massive fight for the Labour selection there-West looks like it might be a notional Conservative seat, particularly if the UKIP vote holds up.
