Alsager TC East Ward Con 476/437 Lab 279/249 LD 228 Grn 124
1 Con gain from LD The other Con win - I don’t know if it was a gain or hold. Big slip in the LD vote.

The two vacancies in Alsager East were caused by the resignations of Jo Dale and Julia Hawkins, both Labour - so these are 2 Conservative gains from Lab. The Consrvatives did not contest this town ward in 2011 or 2015 and their solitary candidate came bottom in 2019 behind the Lib Dem and Labour candidates.
This does not quite fit into the pattern of Labour holding on in the North West, but Alsager is at the southern end of Cheshire East on the borders of the Potteries, so maybe this result conforms to the West Midlands pattern.
Alsager (Central) (4 seats)
5 May 2011 – Lib Dem 974, Independent 449/115, Green Party 402, Lab 308, No Description 201 (1 Lib Dem, 1 Independent, 1 Green Party and 1 Lab elected) 7 May 2015 – Lib Dem 1198, Independent 804, Green Party 593, UKIP 487/485, Lab 475/431 (1 Lib Dem, 1 Independent, 1 Green Party and 1 UKIP elected) 2 May 2019 – Lib Dem 732, Con 493/475/437/421, Lab 364/345/335 (1 Lib Dem and 3 Con elected)
Alsager (East) (6 seats)
5 May 2011 – Lib Dem 4, Lab 1 – unopposed – 1 vacancy for co-option 7 May 2015 – Lib Dem 4, Lab 2 – unopposed 2 May 2019 – Lib Dem 696/674, Lab 607/550/538/490, Con 489 (2 Lib Dem and 4 Lab elected)

I might add that the chairman of the town council is one of the 2 remaining Labour members.

The Lib Dem gain in Knaresborough gives them overall control of the town council, where previously they had casting vote control through the mayor. The various ward elections have tended to swing between the Lib Dems and Conservatives, although the Lib Dems had a clean sweep of all 15 seats in 2007. The wards changed in 2019, when Harrogate Borough was re-warded, and the council size was reduced from 15 to 12.

Defected from the GreenParty I believe But successfully elected as an Animal Welfare Party candidate. Fairly sure Jane Smith is their sole elected councillor. Defected in 2017. Re-elected in 2019. 2019 was slightly curious. 4 vacancies. Nobody fielded a full slate. 3 LDs, 3 Lab, 2 Cons, 1 AWP. I would guess the AWP picked up a lot of "spare" votes.

This has very strong UKIP 2014 vibes, when every defection of a minor provincial district councillor was treated as a national news story.

ALDC have got excited again.. Victory in the police commissioner election is clearly "nailed on" EDIT:Chippenham is where the Lib Dem PCC candidate lives, so this is likely connected in terms of effort

Chippenham Town Council (Pewsham ward) - death of Richard Bambury (Con), who had served since 2017.
The Lib Dems have always been top of the poll in Pewsham ward town council elections - including in 2021, when Richard Bambury came second, but the Lib Dems only fielded 1 candidate for 3 seats
3 May 2007 (North Wiltshire district) – Lib Dem 882/729/714, Con 768/738 – 1 Lib Dem and 2 Con elected 2 May 2013 – Lib Dem 647/490/270, Con 434 - 2 Lib Dem and 1 Con elected 5 May 2017 – Lib Dem 790/506/505, Con 670/595 - 1 Lib Dem and 2 Con elected 6 May 2021 – Lib Dem 857, Con 591, Green Party 307, Independent 306 – 1 Lib Dem, 1 Con and 1 Green Party elected

Isle of Wight - Newport and Carisbrooke town council by-election
Independents or Conservatives? - and the Green Party
Newport and Carisbrooke Town Council (Carisbrooke and Gunville ward) - caused by the failure of Bev Hastings (No Description), who was elected unopposed on 6 May 2021, to sign the declaration of acceptance of office.
Bev Hastings was the defeated Conservative candidate in the IOW council elections (Carisbrooke and Gunville ward), which was won by the Green Party. Her husband is Steve Hastings, Leader of the IOW Conservative Group.
Result of by-election
Matt Ambrosini (Carisbrooke Resident, Championing the Local Community) - 220 Stephen Rushbrooke (Green Party) - 145 Verity Bird (Independent) - 111
Matt Ambrosini, aged 18, a student at Cowes Enterprise College, is actually a Conservative, but the Conservatives do not contest seats at town council level. He stood as a Conservative in the recent IOW council elections in Newport Central, but was defeated by the same Stephen Rushbrooke (Green Party).
Enterprising!

More excitement for the ALDC ?
There is a by-election on 2 September in Talavera ward of the newly formed Northampton Town Council, where Labour town councillor, Lorraine Chirisa, also failed to sign the declaration of acceptance of office.
The second seat in Talavera ward was won by the Lib Dems, who were comfortably top of the poll, but only fielded 1 candidate for the 2 seats.

Talavera could be an important step on the path for the Lib Dems. Well it worked for Wellington anyway.

The LD councillor for the Town Council (and also on the unitary authority) is Dennis Meredith, who looks to have a pretty strong personal vote.
