There was a council by-election yesterday for the Hill ward of Gainsborough Town Council in Lincolnshire. Turnout was 6.76% resulting in a Liberal Democrat hold. Liberal Democrat | 138 | 37.3% | Gainsborough Independent | 122 | 33.0% | Labour | 63 | 17.0% | For Gainsborough since 1980 | 47 | 12.7% | Total votes | 370 |
|
Strange description “For Gainsborough since 1980”. It made me wonder what town Aaron Taylor was ‘for’ before 1980. Turns out he was born in January 1980.

I wonder if he has ever set foot outside of the town. Not since 1980! "He who is tired of Gainsborough is tired of life".
It is now one hundred and eight years since the town experienced league football. Their lost their place to - gulp - Lincoln City, which must have really smarted.
Before 2018 they had never been either promoted or relegated in their 145 year history (they were relegated).

You are such a nice person but you help me to maintain my lifetime contempt for a lot of Tories! To be fair, resigning from the Council because you lost a vote is a pretty pathetic thing to do. Especially on such a trivial issue.

As an Old Ganian, in both the widest and narrowest sense of the term, I can say I tired of Gainsborough more than 50 years ago, but still have a certain zest for life.

Shaftesbury Town Council, West Ward will see a by election when permissable. This ward was contested last year, but only by independents and a local group called Proud of Shaftesbury, though the East Ward did see sitting councillors standing unsuccessfully for UKIP.

(Source: Cambrian News) Dinah Mulholland (Lab candidate for Ceredigion 2017, 2019) has resigned from Lampeter Town Council after a row over the removal of a memorial on the town square. She cited that the memorial was removed without council consultation because it was untidy. The memorial was in remembrance of a person alleged to have died through domestic abuse.
Am I correct in my understanding that, under the new rules, Lampeter can either carry on with one less member, co-opt a new member after advertising for the post or hold a by-election on the same day as the Welsh Parliament elections?

I'm not positive that the rules in Wales are the same, but if they are the vacancy is advertised, 14 working days allowed for 10 people to request a by election - in which case one will be held next May or earlier if the rules are changed, and if not the council may co-opt.

In Wales the Community Councils must still advertise the vacancy as usual, however if an election is called any by-election will take place between 1 February and 16 April 2021 on a date set by the Returning Officer of each County Council. Unlike England they will not be held on the first Thursday in May. I presume this is so they don't clash with the Welsh Parliament and PCC elections. So next year in Wales there is a 10 week period to hold delayed by-elections

New vacancy on Portland Town Council in the Portland Tophill East Ward, resignation of Green councillor Sara Harpley. It is likely that we will be submitting a request for a by election, which will then occur when permitted.

Last year this ward for unopposed, 3 Labour and 1 Green elected, but with only 1 seat avaliable I expect that there will be a contest.

Ferndown Town Council, Central Ward Stephen Drinkall (Conservative) has resigned. I would expect that this will lead to a by election given the increasingly contentious local politics. See last year's Dorset Council thread for details and past results.
