There will be four on this date.
East Cambridgeshire DC, Bottisham - Conservative resigned - 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, UKIP North West Leicestershire DC, Measham South - Labour resigned - 3 candidates: Con, Lab, UKIP Northumberland UA, Hexham West - Conservative resigned - 5 candidates: Con, Lab, Green, Ind, No Description (former Liberal Democrat Councillor for Hexham West) Shropshire UA, Oswestry South - Conservative resigned - 4 candidates: Con, Lab, LD, Green
Oswestry South is a rare case of a council by-election in a ward where the Greens are competitive.

Northumberland UA, Hexham West - Conservative resigned - 5 candidates: Con, Lab, Green, Ind, No Description (former Liberal Democrat Councillor for Hexham West) Did the LD's mess up their nomination papers here? If so, that is not good in a ward where they won it in 2009, lost it in 2013 and where they should be aiming to gain it from the conservatives.

They are, but mainly because there was no Labour or Lib Dem last time There was a Lib Dem last time, and both Labour and Lib Dem the time before. We came second in both elections. Figures here: Party | 2009 | 2013
| Conservative | 660
| 448
| Green | 218
| 337
| UKIP | N/A
| 175
| Liberal Democrat
| 201
| 62
| Labour | 79

Incidentally, in 2009 we only stood a paper candidate. In 2013, we ran a decent campaign, albeit with a candidate who was new to the area. This time round, our candidate is an established town councillor. There's no guarantee that we'll take the seat, but I don't think you can reasonably say that our competitiveness here is mainly due to a previous lack of candidates from other parties.

You make a good point, though a lot of your votes would have been from people who would've voted Labour

Of note there's a Town Council by-election after a Tory resigned in Hexham. The interesting thing is that the Lib Dem candidate is Peter Arnold the former leader of Newcastle Council (2004-2006).

The NW Leicestershire ward looks vulnerable but the Labour candidate is high status. Sean Sheahan is the county councillor for the area, a district councillor in Ashby-de-la-Zouch 1991-2007 and for the old Measham ward from 2011 until May last year when he was narrowly beaten in Measham North.

Andrew Teale's previews: blog.englishelections.org.uk/2016/02/by-election-previews-4-february-2016.htmlSorry these have been going up late lately. I'm still working full time, but also nearing the end of my contract so more and more of my free time is going on job hunting (not to mention finishing all the library books I have out from my current library), hence I've been spending less and less time on my websites. On the plus side, I'm probably going to end up going into a part time job or maybe even be fully self employed for a while, so coverage should catch up fairly soon...
