Isn't it said that the Black Death was responsible for a lot of social progress by wiping out a significant portion of the workforce and making labour a rarer and more valuble asset Yes, there is significant evidence that this is the case. It's also got some sort of link to inflation, but I can't remember what of the top of my head. And it shifted the remainder from labour-intensive strip farming to sheep and thus to wool and to wealth and the start of investment. Thus my antagonism to all immigration. The more pressure on the work force the better we are paid and the more investment in automation and the greater improvement to efficiency and productivity.

True, I bet the Celts really regretted taking in all those Saxon boat people.

We can certainly agree that it would have been a matter of intense regret.

I'm sure East Anglian Lefty will be along in a moment but IIRC the current thinking is that there were no Saxon "invasions" as such, just settlements often quite close to existing ones...

Now don't spoil it for either of us! He is arguing with me 'line-by-line' over the entirely hypothetical apocalypse Britain, on my vague imaginings of what might happen, so the Saxons will be really serious.

Quite right, the cyclical nature of history is clear, the collapse of the Empire and the effects of the plague that the riddled the Eastern Romanised Britons left vast abandoned areas open to settlement by the Saxon boat peoples, only in the West were the Celts strong enough to withstand the invasion of refugees from European wars. Those Celts remained in the East were soon living on edges of the wealth agricultural areas, and there they remained until 1066 when they were driven from the land and moved to London, living on the streets, begging and shoplifting. The modern collapse, followed by the wars based on the false constructs of "race" and "religion" will create a similar vacuum allowing the modern refugees a chance to settle. With repartriation of refugees to the Middle East and Africa a no-no, the European States will resettle their minorities in different areas of Britain, clearly the South East will be a French Muslim area, for example.

Todays scenario. A meteorite hits the Palace of Westminster during PMQs. 4 million dead, 90% Londoners, half a million seriously hurt, a further 4 million homeless. 601 MPs including the entire SNP group but not including 2 London MPs on a fact finding junket to Cyprus, who survive, unlike their constituencies. The only MP with cabinet experience to survive is Nick Clegg. Lord Hague has survived. City of London and stock exchange are vaporised. Queen, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge dead. What happens next? Prince George becomes the first boy king since Edward VI (1547-1553), becoming George VII. Due to his age, Prince Harry becomes Prince Regent to carry out the duties of the monarch and calls upon the oldest surviving Conservative MP to become Prime Minister. The surviving MPs meet in Arundel Castle, and having elected a Speaker, they unanimously vote for the dissolution of Parliament and a general election.

I'd guess that most of 'City of London and the Stock exchange' are for all practical purposes on computers somewhere, so whether they can continue to function depends on having people to log in elsewhere

With all the London constituencies gone and Scotland likely to be fully SNP again, The Conservatives likely to have a good majority with Hague as PM.

What happens next? State of Emergency declared. Surviving 49 MPs form an emergency Cabinet including elements from the military. Regionalism proves its worth. General Election deferred for (six? nine?) months. Increased workload for Bradford GPs. Pacers will have to keep going for longer. HS2 cancelled since it will now link Manchester to a hole in the ground. Street parties in Preston.
