Snowden is an interesting figure; all of his instincts were seriously left-wing except for the fact that he believed fervently in Gladstonian fiscal rectitude. And it is amusing to note that MacDonald was defeated in '35 by a Labour candidate who was well to his right in most respects...

I think that creating by-elections for such reasons is not gaining to happen. The electorate have generally reacted against concocted by-elections from the time of Patrick Gordon Walker coming in to Leyton to David Marquand departing from Ashfield.
Parties have learned their lessons from this.

Aah yes, Ashfield. 'I leave without rancour.'
A favourite, if untrue, tale.

Supposedly Woy once had to turn up to a meeting in his constituency called at short notice (or something like that) and turned up on his own at New Street station bewildered and utterly unsure of where to go next.

Jenkins announces to a PLP meeting that he is quitting Westminster to take up his Brussels position - and assures the MPs that "I leave without rancour". According to popular mythology, the Beast of Bolsover piped up with "I thought you were taking Marquand with you?"

Even if it isn't true then it should be and therefore we should all act is if it is.

Did Jenkins ever make reference to 'high ranking politicians' or is it an urban myth?

The best Jenkins story is the one about asparagus tips.

I know that one, I was confused by your comment above saying that it was about something else. Or did I misread?

The best Jenkins story is the one about asparagus tips. Which presumably fits in the same category as the one about Mandelson & the guacamole .... & therefore is subject to the Sibboleth law on historic accuracy ....
