The lowest ebb of BBC election coverage was probably the period around 2007 to 2010. You had stupid Jeremy Vine gimmicks, the boat party and Nick Robinson and Emily Maitlis talking over the results of the Labour leadership election to predict that David Miliband would win.

Heat of the moment stuff, a certain famous American pollster who i have a lot of time for(and corresponded with) called the 2004 Presidential election for Kerry at one point-faulty exit polls

Whilst the general coverage *has* become less awful since those dog days, the unwelcome trend of showing far fewer actual results on screen seems to have remained.

The age that he supposedly looks like is heavily disguised by his ridiculous moustache. Without it he might look much younger.

Given the significance some are attaching to his actions both then and now, might be worth a reminder that IDS stayed leader for another 6 months or so.

My parents knew Vivian Bendall because (as I discovered many years later) he lived in our road at the time. I have no memory of knowing or meeting him. My favourite facts about Tom Iremonger are that (a) his name is Thomas Lascelles Isa Shandon Valiant Iremonger (hence the initials T.L.I.S.V.), and (b) he got exactly the same number of votes* in both 1974 general elections - winning by 285 votes in February and then losing by 778 votes in October. * 19,843

"My swing was only 8% but we had a very rainy evening". Interestingly his result was actually slightly better in the general election the following year.

The police served the constituency "magnanimously" it seems. I wonder what exactly it was they had won from it.

Remember reading that the Labour MP whose death caused this by-election delayed an operation on an order from the Party whips which might have been a contributory factor. Not sure how true that is but if so it's pretty shocking.

On a note related to another thread Millie Miller had been a councillor (and mayor) in both Stoke Newington and Camden, and was the first woman leader of a London borough by heading the Labour group in the latter.

Can't remember exactly where. May have been UK Polling Report or various political books.

Just under 5 hours of CBS news coverage of election night 1984. We all know Reagan swept almost every state but there was also a lot of talk about whether he could secure an "ideological majority," ie. Republicans and conservative Democrats in Congress. Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, Albert Gore and John Kerry all won in their various election races.
