This was uploaded to YouTube a few months ago. Australian election, 5th March 1983. The same channel also has 1984 and 1990 IIRC. 1984 actually has a bit of a UK 2017 feel to it, oddly enough.

Yes, there was a lot happening; 1983 had been a double dissolution election so Hawke held a second election 18 months later to get the one this Senate election timetable but also because there was an increase in the size of the House of Representatives which he correctly predicted would allow him to further increase his majority.

The BBC published their review of news services and had the following to say about their political coverage:
Election Night Replays have been saved (and maybe even extended to include special events, such as referenda, European elections, regional elections and historical elections such as 1995 locals)

7 hrs 45 minutes of Welsh Assembly election night coverage from BBC One Wales in 2007: Which I remember staying up for and bemoaning the lack of constituency results much before 2.30am when Scotland had already churned out a good 20 or so.

I’m not sure if these are available anywhere else, but here’s 1983 in two parts
The same channel also has February 1974.

There's a channel which seems to have every US Presidential election from most networks - www.youtube.com/channel/UC7X0LKts7k4FT498Id_x5sg/videos1980 was an interesting election. It looked very competitive (like 2000) until the last few weeks when Reagan suddenly built up a lead and never looked back.

Just came across this tonight - 1980 Election Reagan-Carter. I hadnt realised that it was quite such a blow out as that! Ah the famous 'Lake Reagan' TV map. Basically the issue is that Carter lost support heaviest in the places where he was strongest in 1976, meaning that he lost a lot of states by tiny margins, turning a solid but not completely overwhelming PV win (it was broadly comparable, slightly larger, than Obama's in 2008, Clinton's in 1996 or, actually, Bush's in 1988) into an EC wipeout. A very peculiar sort of landslide that can only happen when the nominal supporters of the incumbent administration are deeply demoralised.

I love the confusion about which shade of grey was which for those not watching in colour. I remember this election well and it doesn't seem that long ago to me, so need things like that to remind me how it was a world away.

It looked very competitive (like 2000) until the last few weeks when Reagan suddenly built up a lead and never looked back. It was said on the broadcast coverage of the results that Carter's people saw it as tight on the final Saturday, then things drifted away over the next 48 hours due to the Iran hostage situation. Carter was apparently informed the night before the election that he was very likely to lose, and for that reason he appeared emotional in his final campaign speech.
