Do you have to change at Inverness for London? If so, its a branch line. If not, its a mainline, unless you consider Inverness/Perth a branch line too. What does the term branch line even mean? Is St. Erth to St. Ives (to take a very local isolated short example with no further connections) a branch line? Have you ever travelled that route? I suspect there are only three posters here who have. Me being the only non railway employee of the trio. St Erth to St Ives is a branch line. So far as I can recall, there are no direct connections to St Ives save via St Erth. No one calls it a main line route. St Erth is a surprisingly busy station though. MK to Bedford is a branch line. As is Colchester-Clacton. There are lots of examples of branches of that nature.

I suspect that more that three have. In Cornwall, I still require the Newquay branch and the track into Coombe Junction Halt.

Me, you, Gwythegriff. Who else is geeky enough?
Amazed you've never done Coombe Junction if you've managed St Keyne Wishing Well Halt although to be fair waiting for the reversing train was a bit of thing for those of us in Plymouth. As was the Newquay branch- at 17 it was cheaper than the bus and saved someone's car dying on the way!

St Ives isn't just for the geeks, it's a popular tourist line.
Now if you'd said Ellesmere Port to Helsby...

I wouldn't have thought a railway station on Shetland would be hugely useful... especially not in helping you get to London.
