Given that Southport is large enough to have it's own parliamentary constituency (though whether the MP (John Pugh) will be a Liberal Democrat for much longer is obviously a different issue), surely it could justify going it alone. Good heavens! Is he considering changing party? Given his recent comments he might not have much choice

I thought the issue was that Southport wanted out of Merseyside? If they re-joined Lancashire they would have to become a district, but they would be in a better position, as they could run their own affairs at a very local level. Southport into West Lancashire would change the dynamic of that borough, even its centre of gravity, but they would be speaking amongst fellow Lancastrians rather than being drowned out as they seem to know (not dismissing the great work by our team there, obviously) Thing is West Lancashire wasn't too keen - hardly surprising as its currently a knife-edge Lab-Con fight, and the inclusion of Southport would make it permanently hung three-way Southport themselves want to be a unitary , on the lines of Blackpool

Colonialist! I'm half from Down. Though a quarter were from Sligo until about 1910 when they got burnt out for daring to be Protestant. The other three quarters are Papist, either from Down or northern Italy. Though my Italian grandfather was born in Tower Hamlets, to confuse the issue. Ballinasloe in Galway, with a time in Strokestown in Roscommon (where several of the siblings were born). I too have Italian forebears; my late Dad was forever being mistaken for Pakistani when the weather turned hot, but his voice would correct the misunderstanding. My accent though is straight Manc, with the odd bit of Irish idiom.

I agree. Sefton is a really illogical mess which looks as if its all that was left over after everything else had been found a municipal home - but at present Southport is overwhelmingly LibDem, and the rest of Sefton is mostly Labour. Hence it probably doesn't benefit from such a strange borough - any more than did Labour Bootle when all the other areas were electing Tory or LibDem councillors Southport feels like a different place. Bootle, Crosby, even Maghull, is clearly Liverpool - and frankly so is Formby, its full of people who have made a bit of cash and moved there from Liverpool. The accents are scouse-tinged. Not that they would want to admit it! But Southport just doesn't feel like part of a Merseyside met : is it large enough to be a unitary, though? I think they weren't too keen about being a district? It's full of Mancunian retirees! I used to go there at lot as my own grandparents retired to there. But yes, it feels entirely different. Not helped by the train links to Liverpool, which have never been that fast. I can see why it is attractive to Mancs.

All liberals (more or less) are social liberals. The aforementioned sect should be called economic illiberals.

It is an interesting use of the term social liberal because, as he is pro-life and voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, some political reductionists would term him a social conservative.

It can't go back to Yorkshire. It is in Yorkshire. Counties can't be moved. Administrative units can, but they are just temporary structures. Arthur Figgis Kennington Surrey On one level, Yarm can't defect to Yorkshire because it has never been out of Yorkshire. It may have been in Cleveland for administrative purposes but that was an artificial county not a real one. It hasn't been transferred to Durham or to Lancashire. Yarm is in Cleveland. It is not in Yorkshire. The county boundaries were changed in the 1970s by the Great Heath-Walker County Boundary Correction when the county boundaries were set at the correct places after hundreds of years of having been in the wrong places. Thus Yarm could go back to Yorkshire if the county boundaries were changed again, but it's not in Yorkshire at the moment. The administrative counties are correct and real counties, not just administrative boundaries.

Wikipedia says Yarm is in North Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes. Not that they are necessarily the fount of all knowledge. It is generally believed locally that Cleveland County was a construct invented to support a County Council and that when the latter was abolished so was the artificial county, with both sides of the Tees reverting to former county boundaries. Notwithstanding that the towns didn't then join Durham or NY county councils.

And Cleveland is most certainly NOT a real county.....it is an abstract abortion loved by no one with no history or myth or anything at all. Woden rot Heath and all his works.

John's limit regarding geographical knowledge ends at worst at the end of Croydon and at best the M25!

I am not particularly concerned about what is, or is not, incorrectly believed by a tiny number of insane bumpkins from the local area. The inalienable, unalterable, irrefutable and incontrovertible fact remains that Cleveland is a county.

How are Cleveland doing In the County Championship? Have they played Middlesex yet? Thought not. I presume that you are referring to football, or some such similar proletarian pastime. I am not concerned with such things. I am concerned only with normal subjects such as psephology, boundaries, and elections.
