Pretty good week for UKIP and a rather disappointing one for Labour. Decent Con performance too. I thought our results were excellent. Very hard hold in a DC in a LD county division with previous councillor thieving off an elderly lady. 10% swing in our favour in Carlisle and a solid hold in NE Derbyshire which many expected us to lose. I thought you might hold on in Derbyshire - that area is swinging your way, demographically speaking. But our result in Carlisle, particularly, was distinctly unimpressive - am trying to find out if there are any local explanations for it.....

Andrew's preview did point out it's very much a division of two halves. Getting the vote out in more deprived areas is even more difficult in by-elections than in May elections, so differential turnout may have been at least a partial contributor.

Getting the vote out in more deprived areas is even more difficult in by-elections than in May elections, so differential turnout may have been at least a partial contributor. There is that - also that this ward (as with most of Carlisle at district level) will be voting again next month. (which does, indeed, raise the question of why this vacancy couldn't have waited until May 22)

We're snapping at Labour's heels in this ward.
The second labour County council seat in the Trelawney ward is up for grabs on May 22nd after the sitting Labour Councillor disappeared to Hull claiming that he could still represent the Flint ward from there until being shamed into standing down.
Nigel Williams despite losing last night who gained 29% of the vote in the County council election and losing by 6 votes in the Town council election from a standing start put his nomination papers in today for the other vacant seat.
Should be interesting.

Another Toewn Concl result from Thursday:
SKIPTON TOWN COUNCIL South Ward Independent seat (death)
BELL, Gordon (Independent Respecting and Protecting our Skipton) 264 HALL, Duncan John (Labour) 114 KENDALL, Tcherina Bronwen (Conservative) 60 MANLEY, John Graham (Liberal Democrat) 34
No change. Turnout 17.34%
The Robert Heseltine Independents are entrenched in this ward. Their glossy leaflets were fujll of purple, not sure if that means anything!

This might be as good a place as any to mention that yesterday saw a byelection in Wellington TC in the Wrekin.
Labour gain, which apparently sees them take overall control.
