Labour councillor resigned. 59.7% in 2023, nearest opponent was a Tory with 27.0%. Spread of right-wing candidates and no Lib Dem/Greens makes Labour favourites at outset.

Like the Scottish Specials at the end there. They usually announce their election dates earlier, so expect England/Wales vacancies to join those lists in due course. Yes, in Scotland there is prescribed process and timetable for filling vacancies, none of this "waiting for 2 electors to write to the council" nonsense. |

Don't let it be said that this isn't a well thought out plan. Although it has to be said that rather than find two properties to buy/rent sofa surf, it might just be a tiny bit easier to find four friends or party colleagues in Barking and Dagenham to do it. Less of a soap opera but possibly cheaper. |

I think Barking and Dagenham holds the record for the longest time a London Borough council seat has been vacant before calling a byelection - one of the 1967 byelections had been vacant for over a year.
