I believe her father is Keith Smith, who stood three times in Edinburgh Pentlands, 1983 and 1987 for the SDP, and 1992 for the Lib Dems. Quite an important fellow in the Scottish SDP. His name was among the 100 that appeared in support of the Limehouse Declaration in February 1981. Prior to that he'd been the Scottish organiser of the Campaign for Labour Victory.

They weren't very close to winning Pentlands in 1983 In terms of percentage margin not exceptionally close, but I'm sure it would have been a winnable seat in the event of the SDP doing a bit better nationally. Not really. It proved a remarkably difficult to seat for Labour to oust the Conservatives even after the construction of the Wester Hailes estate. It remained Conservative despite a couple of close calls ahead of Labour in 1966 and October 1974. Malcolm Rifkind continued to defy the odds and held on until 1997. The SDP did come second in 1983 but subsequently their vote fell away and the Lib Dems were pushed into 4th place by 1997. The Lib Dems are often left in 5th place by the Greens (6th in 2011 behind Margo MacDonald) in the Scottish Parliamentry seat.

The Keith Smith of the embarrassing story isn’t the Keith Smith who fought Edinburgh Pentlands. Yes, even allowing for 30 years passing, the South Devon Keith Smith doesn't look like the Edinburgh Keith Smith I remember. there are probably 20 Keith Smiths in Devon alone!
