Following the elections from the sidelines through X, it seems like that in many Tory - Lib Dem marginals the contest is between an identikit Tory, imported shortly before the election, against a local Lib Dem, often (former) councillor in the area, who has been campaigning for years, often since 2019. In the current climate this can’t be very helpful for the Conservatives.

In many cases it will be very helpful because they are a new face and not the irritating prick forever staring at potholes with a smirk or a frown and clutting the doormat with endless junk.

Did the Tories do those things in Woking? Because they certainly didn't in Wokingham.

If she said 'chatted with some locals about the state of the town centre' it would sound a lot more believable. But instead it's the usual two word stock phrases. Oh, that's bloody rich - it was the Conservative led district council which led the ruinous redevelopment scheme in Woky town centre - they should remember as it was one of the main reasons why the long-standing Conservative admits got the boot. As for a seat prediction, I'd say this seat is a likely Lib Dem gain. It'll be more difficult for them than on the old boundaries, but an investment banker not established in the area won't have the same appeal in the more traditional Berkshire villages like Hurst and Swallowfield that Redwood did, and the larger towns like Twyford, Woky itself & Winnersh have strong Lib Dem bases. The Tories have a lot on their plate close by to defend - a recently more potent threat from Labour in Bracknell, from the LDs again in West Berks and Windsor + Maidenhead. They also have a Green candidate who is an additional thorn in their side, as an old parish councillor in Twyford and well known across the northern part of the seat as the chairman of various committees and a regular at Hurst Cricket Club. I just can't see them being able to commit the activists they need to defend it, especially when they're threatened everywhere in the seat.

Leaflet count so far: Lib Dem 5 (Inc 1 letter and 1 'national' paid delivery), Con 0. (everyone else nil) Some good Jones poster sites on main roads (and a cracking one at the entrance to Twyford station)
Visible Tory activity limited to social media posts of the 'canvassing in Hurst, great reception' variety.
[As an aside I'm still waiting for a candidate to post 'canvassing in Blogsville, everyone told us to f off']
It's far from over but with only just over a week before postal votes go out I'd say Lib Dems have the momentum.

I saw my parents over the weekend and they weren't even aware that the Tories had selected a candidate yet.

Alasdair Rae has posted an updated version of his chart showing constituencies by deprivation:
A lot of orange in that rightmost column, with this seat right at the bottom.
