Another seat Seb Payne's trying for... He gets this supposedly "plum" seat......and then loses. This is the maximum banter scenario, and we surely all want it to happen Indeed. Much as it Paynes him to realise it.

Can someone enlighten me as to who Seb Payne is? If you were blissfully unaware until now, then you would have been wise to leave things that way.

Sebastian E Payne's most (in)famous moment is when he tweeted that Leo Varadkar had "lost his seat" in Dublin South and that "politics was a brutal business" with almost undisguised glee - it was then pointed out that Varadkar had finished 2nd on 1st preferences and that Ireland used STV and multi member seats - which as a (then) journalist on The Times he really should have known.
Payne deleted the tweet instead of acknowledging the error after the inevitable pile on ensued.
During his tenure at the FT he produced what was a classic piece of client journalism in a profile of Alexander de Pfeffel Johnson - it was so utterly hagiograpic you would think he was auditioning for the role of official biographer. 🫤

Varadkar represents Dublin West but other than that - yes, very silly error for a professional journalist specialising in politics to make. There isn't currently a Dáil constituency simply called Dublin South.

The broken heartlands book is one I should get though. It does have good reviews and he is from the north east so the perspective will be interesting.

There isn't currently a Dáil constituency simply called Dublin South. It was abolished in 2016 and the majority of it became part of Dublin Rathdown.

Sebastian E Payne failed in his attempt for the Conservative nomination by 2 votes. Ed "Liz Truss - a force for good" McGuinness was successful instead.

Payne actually got the most votes on the first round but got gazumped on the second ballot. Liz Truss clearly won the members' vote in 2022, and so may still be popular with constituency associations.

You don't become the most successful political party in British history by keeping hypocrisy at arm's length.

Much amusement in this constituency. The new Conservative candidate has announced he has a 'home in the constituency':
Which turned out to be an AirBnB:

Seriously, why do they do stuff like this?
It just shows the underlying contempt so many Tories now have for the voters, and admittedly small in themselves things like the above all add up.

Safe seats innit. Representing a constituency is secondary to playing the game.
