As has been noted before, the Skipton constituency which nearly went Liberal in 1974 contained large tracts which are not in the present Skipton & Ripon constituency, where many of the Liberal votes would have come from. Quite a lot of this territory is nowadays in Lancashire, post-1973 - the constituency boundaries didn't catch up with the fact that part of the seats was now in Lancashire until 1983. Since then Skipton & Ripon has been, at least until last week, a safe Tory seat.

Hereford staying Tory of those three cathedral cities surprised since it was Lib Dem held until *checks notes* 2010. The Tories came close to wipe-out in all the cathedral cities - the days when the Church of England was the Tory Party at prayer are long gone, which is a good thing since we don't have evangelical right wing nutters like the USA. That's one area where I don't see parallels to the USA at all.
