Former Manchester City Councillor Iain Donaldson picked as LibDem candidate. I was expecting it to be Andy Kelly.

Mark Coleman is on Twitter here. He's an Anglican priest who supports Just Stop Oil. Billy Howarth is founder of Parents Against Grooming UK, and is on Twitter here. David Tully & Co is a car repair place; whether the candidate has anything to do with it I don't know... Or could he be the same David Tully who stood for the Derwentside Independents in Tanfield division of County Durham in 2021?

As for Michael Howarth-which Michael Howarth? There are at least 5 people with that name in or near Rochdale who have made a news article at least once.

David Tully is the owner of the car repair garage; he's also a director of the Mayfield Sports Centre, which is otherwise known as Rochdale's Rugby League ground.

Mark Coleman is the retired former Vicar of Rochdale An Anglican priest. Theives and Prostitutes pray for his soul but they are wasting their prayers.

In the Good Old Days it would be unusual for any candidate to 'live' in the constituency they were standing for, especially if it was a scruff-arsed dump like Rochdale! Who on earth would choose to life there as well as have the indignity of representing it?

It would appear so. What are the odds of that these days? By-elections so far this parliament (including Kingswood and Wellingborough): Candidates Men/Total Conservative 13/21 Labour 13/20 Lib Dem 8/20 Green 9/16 Reform 14/16 Others 104/134 Multiplying these probabilities together (allowing for 5 “others” (not counting George Galloway because he’s sui generis)) the probability of all men is .0223 or about 1/45. The calculations are approximate because I skimmed through the results quickly without double-checking my counting, and without being too precise about checking the genders of some of the candidates with ambiguous first names. P.S. The last parliamentary by-elections in which the candidates were all men were: Newark 5th June 2014, with 11 candidates Middlesbrough 29th November 2012, 8 candidates Belfast West 9th June 2011, 6 candidates Sedgefield 19th July 2007, 11 candidates Cheadle 14th July 2005, 5 candidates Falkirk West 21st December 2000, 5 candidates Preston 23rd November 2000, 9 candidates
