Pete Stauber (R-MN) is an additional non-Jordan vote. A Staub in the back?

Yes, they seem to be in uncharted constitutional waters.
For instance, suppose McHenry starts to assert some of the powers normally associated with the Speaker - bringing a Bill to the floor of the House, for instance.
I presume the remedy for anyone thinking he is exceeding his authority is a motion to vacate the chair. But if such a motion is voted down, then his action will be upheld and lo! It's suddenly part of his suite of powers.
(If he wants to try this he should start with a Bill that will appeal to all or most of the Democrats and a significant number of Republicans. Something proposing aid for Israel ought to do the trick.)
Incidentally, does anyone know whether McHenry has in his turn privately nominated a successor to the Clerk?
Although it's obviously unlikely to ever come to it there is also the question over the Presidential line of succession, I believe the interim Speaker position can't count for that at the moment so it would go down to the next level I've definitely seen somewhere that McHenry isn't in the line of succession - but I couldn't tell you where.

It is really simple. McHenry is not Speaker of the House of Representatives.

It’d be funny if, after all the thumb screws, Jordan pulls out.

"Which party is more united?"
All: Democrats: 51% Republicans: 16%
Among Democrats: Democrats: 79% Republicans: 3%
Among Independents: Democrats: 40% Republicans: 7%
Among Republicans: Republicans: 40% Democrats: 33%

Makes one wonder who the 3% Democrats are...

It used to be joked "I am a member of no organised political faction. I am a Democrat". No longer.

Lee Zeldin got more votes. Were he to get the job, he'd be the highest ranking Jewish Republican since Eric Cantor quit as House Majority Leader in 2014. This whole debacle is some Oxford University Conservative Association level shit.

It seems that Jordan is determined to have another go today, House convenes at 17:00 BST, but all indications are that he will lose even more votes.

I guess he may think that if McCarthy could clinch it after 15 goes, he can win the umpteenth ballot. Some concessions being offered to hold outs on aid for Ukraine/Israel. Jordan also been pressed to accept some restrictions on his power as Speak in order to win over others. But it's hard to see Jordan accepting the later and some opponents going public with the threats they have received from the MAGA base will be hard to row back on. There might be some churn again, but I would expect Jordan loses more votes and I can't see the caucus persisting after a third ballot given how little good will he has among his colleagues.

Stories floating around that the anti-Jordan Republicans are rather more organised than the rest: they have apparently been rationing how many actually vote against Jordan, and are planning to switch a few more each vote so that opposition is seen to be growing. Such fun.

Such fun. What is really interesting is how the opposition to Jordan seemed to going very soft over the weekend to the point where there was a genuine belief that Jordan might just be able to win. It is now clear that this was illusory and I can't help suspect that someone senior is behind this. It just seems more organised than the disparate alliance of rebels that it looks like on the surface.

I think it’s likely that the intimidation tactics have hardened some views, even if there’s no evidence that Jordan has approved any of it the fact that it’s come from supporters of his is enough

So lets just take stock of what Matt Gaetz has achieved. He has left the Republican controlled house with a interim speaker who is probably more moderate than McCarthy and his little to no legitimacy. The chances that the priorities of the GOP right will be better advanced in the upcoming appropriations/spending/shutdown negotiations than would have happened under McCarthy is next to non-existent.

Rep Jim Banks (R-IN) has called this "the biggest the biggest fuck you to Republican voters" and claims that half of the GOP conference will vote against McHenry. Banks is very much on the right but he isn't a nut job. If he is talking like this there is real opposition. Therefore McHenry's fate is in the hands of the Democrats and they surely aren't going to help him out without getting something pretty big in return.
