Is there a reason why this one hasn't been merged with the Metro Mayor yet Greater Manchester has? IIRC the boundaries are identical.

Is there a reason why this one hasn't been merged with the Metro Mayor yet Greater Manchester has? IIRC the boundaries are identical. It was on the table in 2017 because I remember David Jamieson talking about it at a wedding. He expected them to merge at the 2020 election (obviously that became 2021) despite personal views but as recently as a couple months ago Chris Philp said it was still being considered. I wonder if the new chap is less keen. EDIT: I've now seen Davıd Boothroyd'a post. Here is my source on Philp's comments: www.saqibbhatti.org.uk/news/saqib-calls-labour-police-and-crime-commissioner-be-scrapped

I wonder if this was Street's price for not leaving the Conservative Party after they screwed him on HS2.

I'm not a great fan of metro mayors, but if we are going to have them, then they should take on supervision of the police. At least they are public figures who can be held to account, rather than the band of eccentrics, incompetents, and nonentities who glory in the title of "police and crime commissioner".

Er, does this mean that the West Midlands (on the same boundaries) has currently got a Metropolitan Mayer, and a Police & Crime Commissioner, who are two different people? i.e. that the PCC is simply being abolished for the forthcoming election? Why aren't they the same person in the first place?

Why aren't they the same person in the first place? I believe at one stage the Mayoral position was going to include more than just the West Mids Met County

Aren't there moves to merge the two roles there as well?

Yes, the pcc, mayor and politicians in South Yorkshire are in general agreement on doing this, so I expect it's just a time and paperwork formality.

"The region’s Labour PCC, Simon Foster, "deeply disagreed" and described the move as "cynical and divisive power grab”." In other words, "I can't be paid to do nothing anymore".

If Street stands which I understand he can, I will cast a rare vote for the Conservatives, simply because it is ridiculous for the metro mayor, if we must have one, not to take on the role of Police Commisioner, if we must have one. Of course if Street were to lose the mayoral election and win the police one (far from impossible) the mess would be glorious.
