Pleased that Andrew has mentioned Greenalls' former brewery which is what I would associate with Wilderspool. Bullsmoor is in fact a ward which has come back into existence, it was an often-marginal ward, sometimes split, before it was largely redrawn as Turkey Street in the 2002 boundary changes.

I remember the ubiquitous adverts on Granada in the 1980s "Oh I wish I was in Greenall Whitley land" - didn't spot that they got out of brewing entirely.

yes. their trajectory has been rather similar to Vaux who continued to run hotels long after they stopped brewing or owning pubs. Or indeed Whitbread. Greenalls was decent but uninspiring beer. I did see a pub in Southampton which still had Greenalls livery a few days ago, but they have long since ceased to brew or run pubs.

Some of my quite early under-age drinking was at lock-ins at a north Shropshire pub selling Wilderspool Ales. Was that from the brewery noted?

Pleased that Andrew has mentioned Greenalls' former brewery which is what I would associate with Wilderspool. I associate Wilderspool with ... Formerly the site of the Warrington Rugby League stadium. Location of the reversing siding for coal trains out of Fiddlers Ferry power station. Roman pottery? The brewery was Greenall-Whitley. The Whitley family produced Edward, founder of Paignton Zoo. And (drum roll) the location of both the Corporation and Crosville bus garages in the town. (Though Crosville's shut years ago and the Corporation is relocating.) Quite a history.

I should have course mentioned that these signs were visible to rail users. These two variants are different to both mine and your ideas!
These two are both on the heritage railway in Swanage.

Were they the ones who had adverts in fields alongside the railway too? EDIT: It seems they were.

Strongs of Romsey, taken over by Whitbread, closed down early eighties I think.

That looks like a slam dunk so far. So much for memory of car rides with parents. And commendations on the rapidity and energy of these responses you so often pull off.
