So, a strikingly similar result to Rotherham last year in the end - not least in the comedy LibDem score Congratulations to Emma

There was a rumour on Twitter that the Loonies had outpolled the Lib Dems. Now if the Loonies could get their act together they might be able to smash a few other parties.

Oh and one for David or Wikipedia - what's the last election when a party with MPs came 7th or worse? Possibly some in Northern Ireland but otherwise?

The Lib Dems have come seventh or worse before in this Parliament - they were eighth in Rotherham.

Ah I forgot Rotherham - I didn't get to see that result as I was away that night.

Solid result for us, in line with what I expected. Obvious a poor result for the Lib Dems but their focus tonight is elsewhere.

Still, it is their lowest share in a parliamentary by-election since 1948 or something. Worse than Rotherham last year takes some doing, tbh

Its a bit silly given that they are tracking to the moderate-left wing of the labour party. If Tony Blair said it it would have been more understandable and powerful. It just sounds silly at the moment. Its like me claiming im a cuddly social-democrat.

For those who like this...the video of the declaration
Why did the Labour candidate wear a blue jackett? I believed all Labour women have a red tailleur for these occasions.

Christabel Flight, a Westminster Conservative who was taking the numbers on the Marylebone High Street byelection with me on Thursday, was apologising to her party workers because she had come in a striking red jacket.
(Susie Burbridge was by contrast in a very Tory blue)

LabourList writes that the South Shields CLP's contact rate pre by-election was around 0.2%....if true, it would mean they didn't even bother after losing some council wards to Independents/Progressives.

There were also some S Tyneside wards where Labour were run close last year despite holding them four years earlier - could that be part of the same thing??

I sometimes wonder what the result of a by-election would be (either parliamentary or local) if either or both of the two [local] main parties (a) did lots of campaigning (b) did no campaigning or leafleting at all.

Well, I'm sure the former has happened quite a few times. I agree the latter would be an interesting control experiment, though.....

Particularly if the only way voters knew of polling day was via their polling card....
