Why would Blair give up a zillion a year Job with the influence it has to stand for parliament in Yorkshire? Rishi Sunak did...

it tends to be a most prevalent assumption when there has been a large number of defeated candidates in the previous election but yes, it's an odd assumption given that it is fairly rare. But in the 1966-70 Parliament several defeated Tory MPs found their way back into Parliament via by-elections - Chris Chataway & Julian Amery come to mind straight away It happened a lot in the 1979-83 Parliament, Teddy Taylor, Tim Smith and Richard Page all being examples. And let's not forget Tony Benn's comeback in the following parliament.

The retread we all want to see here is Jared O'Mara. ”We”? “All”? “Want”? “Here”? Have you completely forgotten what any of those words mean?!?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Andy Burnham Wrong side of the Pennines. That's not likely to stop any journalists though. Most of them probably think Pennines is Welsh for "Chilterns" anyway

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Andy Burnham Or Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. (as for Andy Burnham, as said above, crossing the Pennines would not go down well at all on either side of it) I'm surprised we haven't heard mentions of any others who lost nearby in 2019, I was thinking Thelma Walker, Paula Sheriff, or more high profile, Caroline Flint (whose Brexit views could go down well here)

Wakefield South (now Rural) was one of the safest Tory divisions in Yorkshire many moons ago (maybe still is) and I believe used to be in Hemsworth rather awkwardly. Assume a high turnout there may help Tory hold causes but I'd suspect an unconvincing Labour gain on a poor turnout And Election Calculus have the Conservatives just carrying this ward on current polling over Labour! Hmmm. Wakefield South and Wakefield Rural are two separate wards. Rural is in the Wakefield seat, South is not. Both have strong but not unconquerable Tory votes. Neither have surely been classed a one of the safest Tory divisions in Yorkshire. At a pinch maybe South could be in the top 10 list in West Yorkshire for consistency?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Andy Burnham Or Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. I think the good burghers of Wakefield would have the sense to roll their eyes at both those choices.

Yes, I forgot that she left Labour, I was just thinking of 2019 Labour losses in Yorkshire!

I can imagine him being put forward in Mid Derbyshire (assuming the current member retires), and though I don't think anybody has any animosity to Derbyshire or anyone from it (it seems to be the most 'neutral' of counties that doesn't provoke any negative reaction from anyone), it's still a bit of a stretch, I think the 'parachute' factor is still net-negative.

if he has any common sense he will tell them no. He would have almost no chance of winning

PS I should say I'd be astonished if the local Conservative party were keen on any sort of parachuted candidate, it seems more like something that would seem a good wheeze in a newspaper office.
