Prince Philip did win a contested election in his life (Chancellor of Cambridge University, unopposed).
His predecessor Prince Albert won the same post in a contested election.

If the Lib Dems repeat the Chesham & Amersham swing in Old Bexley & Sidcup CON 44.6% LD 38.5% But they won't. What was the point?

"Just a bit of fun" as Peter Snow used to say. Of course arguably the main take on that is even replicating the C&A swing, they still wouldn't win.

Aah is the mayor going to do the announcement? Personally I think mayors should do more of them.

Perhaps but this highlights the nonsense around making the Mayor the Returning Officer. The person who actually runs the election should be the Returning Officer; there's too much Acting and Deputy in the system for clarity. By all means allow the Mayor in regalia to make the announcement but electoral processes shouldn't be structured around that.
(And in the process set down some clear consistent rules. All present & willing candidates lined up for the declaration. Party names/descriptions to be included in the announcement. Rejected ballot papers to be announced first to get them out of the way/give the TV time to switch over.)

Apparently that mayor of Bexley is only about 42! Younger than I am! Was talking about him with some locals last time I was in the Kentish Belle.

Simone Reynolds (https://www.libdems.org.uk/simone-reynolds-ppc) has been announced as the Liberal Democrat candidate - she previously contested this seat at the 2019 general election, and served as the Lib Dem candidate for the St.Michael's Ward By-Election in 2016 and as their PPC for Bexleyheath and Crayford Constituency at the 2017 General Election. In 2018 Simone stood as a candidate for Sidcup Ward in the Local Council Elections.

Who else will come forward? They have only 5 days to hand in nomination papers-normally prospective candidates get at least a week.

If Heath retired in '97, would Labour have done better here?

With long serving MPs there's often a point where their personal effect switches to a negative "Gone on for too long". I'm not sure if/when this hit here.

If Heath retired in '97, would Labour have done better here? They'd have come second rather having the sitting MP 😉

If Heath retired in '97, would Labour have done better here? Swing was 14% from Conservative to Labour. Not as high as the 18% in the likes of some Outer London seats like Brent North and Upminster but still about the London average. Little evidence that Heath had much bearing on the result either way.

A couple of quick searches on Twitter reveal no evidence of a Lib Dem campaign here at all. It's all Reform UK, Labour and Tories.
