I'm not surprised they are standing - the Prescot wards are their strongest area in Knowsley. In Prescot West they are standing the former incumbent who lost last May so it is not impossible that they could end the one party hegemony that currently exists.

A Conservative in St Michaels? Could be an attempt to beat the Greens' recent result in Stourbridge.

I had no idea that the Pemberton ward incorporated Gathurst (that's Gat-ust, locally). Decent pub at Gathurst train station, or at least it was last time I ventured that way.

I'm surprised the TUSC aren't standing in all three Knowsley wards. This should be ripe territory for them to try and get a good result. If they aren't standing here then they are going nowhere.

Not by-elections, but ......
The new Crewe Town Council holds its inaugural elections on 4th April.
20 members, as follows:
Crewe Central 2 Crewe East 6 Crewe North 2 Crewe South 4 Crewe West 4 Crewe St Barnabas 2
[No, I don't know why they used geographic describers for all the wards ... bar one. Especially since the Church of St Barnabas, Crewe is in ... er ... Crewe Central ward. And the Vicar of St Barnabas has to walk past his church hall - which is also in Crewe Central, but used as a polling station for the St Barnabas ward - to vote half a mile away!]
In the 2011 Cheshire East elections there was a clean sweep for Labour except in Crewe North, which was won by the Conservatives. However the 'progressive' vote was split by the presence of a popular local Independent.
A clean sweep of 20 Labour members is not unlikely!

Your description of the split vote appears to match Leighton ward, but Election Maps suggests that has its own parish. Have there been changes in ward boundaries, or was that just momentary confusion?

Its actually split. Most of the area of the ward and including the hospital is in Eddisbury but the residential areas in the east which provide the bulk of the electorate are in Crewe & Nantwich

I remember when doing my Cheshire East ward proposal a few years ago that the boundaries of the wards and electoral districts in the maps supplied to me by the council didn't seem to match in areas around Crewe. The parish boundary slices right through the James Atkinson Way estate, but the polling district line is better drawn. This can be seen on this very useful interactive map here.
