Elected in 2019 so seat not up until 2023 (although if he makes it through the day as a Conservative councillor he'll be doing well).

If Labour win the upcoming by-election in Marine ward, they'll need a net gain of 3 seats in May for a majority.

Possibly just about doable - in 2018 we didn't win Gaisford or Marine which we did win this year, and we were within 100 votes in Castle. That said, the Tory vote hasn't really collapsed in any of the wards we've taken off them, so it would be a very narrow path to a majority. A Lab-Lib coalition seems like a much more plausible outcome to aim for.

The Labour team in the borough seem pretty well organised and capable of driving up turnout.

Worthing is unusual in that Labour can win control despite losing the popular vote.*
It's like a reverse of Wandsworth but more extreme.
*helped by the by-election gain in Marine and a defection

that is true - the Tories are very safe indeed in Salvington, Goring & Offington in particular, and pile up a lot of votes rather inefficiently. Good for them in the parliamentary seat though. Durrington not far behind either from their point of view.

Worthing is unusual in that it could be a Labour council when five years ago there wasn't a Labour Councillor. Tbf ukip gained Thanet without previously having a presence but sharp swings like this are usually discouraged in voting by thirds

What is happening about the proposed merge of Worthing and Adur councils? I see that the Adur council website is now an Adur and Worthing councils site, which suggests a merger could be happening soon.

There are a few other councils around that I've come across which also have shared websites, but I'm trying to remember where exactly now...

A merger may be less likely if Labour take control of Worthing while the Conservatives retain Adur

Lewes and Eastbourne further down the Sussex coast for one.
