Have only just noticed that there wasn't any Labour candidate in the Fenland contest! A bit disappointing, tbh.....

If UKIP can get 7% in a ward like Evelyn it implies their level of support nationally is well above 10% as most polls show.

The point Andy was making is that demographical;ly you would expect this to be a very weak ward for UKIP, given barely a quarter of the population are of White British ethnic origin. Regardless of turnout, the party must have polled very strongly amongst this group and this group is represented in somewhat higher proportions in other parts of the country

The Lib Dem candidate is the son of the late Morris Crossfield - 'Mr Horsforth'. Morris was a very colourful character who was much loved in Horsforth - a village that once prided itself on being the largest village in England (it's the size of a small to medium town)- and resented being put into Leeds MDC in 1974. Morris lived and breathed Horsforth but was, I think, somewhat blind to the needs of those parts of the ward that were later added to make up the electoral numbers. I remember commenting to him at a social event in neighbouring Rawdon that I understood that where we were was now in his ward. I recall him replying, "Aye, so they tell me lad, but I never get up here myself!" He lost his seat on Leeds City Council the following May - something that many people in Horsforth found difficult to understand - but perhaps the people of Rawdon didn't! Although Morris was a Liberal Councillor, he did have some rather illiberal leanings. A former colleague once told me that he said to her by way of compliment, "I don't think you should be here - but I think you're doing a great job nevertheless". I asked her what he meant by that. She replied that he didn't approve of women Councillors! Most controversially, he was a former member of the blackshirts - something that you might have thought he would have liked to forget but, typically for Morris, he kept banging on about it. In spite of that, he was a very likeable character and was extremely well respected in Horsforth. Of course, I have no reason to believe that his son Tony shares any of those views and, in my contacts with him, I have found him to be firmly committed to Liberal Democrat values. I wish him well for his future electoral ventures. Zardoz

The Wellington town council by-election did fall below Listener’s sonar. UKIP have won a seat from the Conservatives, in what was a three-way marginal returning one town councilor from each major party at the last town council election. The Lib Dems won the borough seat in 2007 and 2011.
Here is some background to the by-election in the Dothill ward of Wellington Town Council in the unitary Borough of Telford and Wrekin.
Wellington Town Council comprises 21 members, elected from seven wards as follows – Arleston (3), College (3), Dothill (3), Ercall (3), Haygate (3), Park (3) and Shawbirch (3).
The town wards are coterminous with the borough wards of the same name.
The council strengths were:
Elections on 3 May 2007: Con 12, Lab 3, Lib Dem 3, Independent 3 Elections on 5 May 2011: Lab 8, Con 8, Lib Dem 3, Independent 2
The current town mayor is Labour and the deputy mayor is Independent. At the annual meeting on 8 May 2012, the Labour town mayor was elected unopposed, but the Independent deputy mayor (proposed by Lib Dem and seconded by Labour) defeated a Conservative candidate by 10 votes to 7.
The result in Dothill on 3 May 2007 was: Lib Dem 590, Con 431/372/297, Lab 312 Elected: Lib Dem 1, Con 2
The result in Dothill on 5 May 2011 was: Lib Dem 538, Con 401/253, Lab 363/297 Elected: Lib Dem 1, Con 1, Lab 1
Denis Allen (UKIP) gained the by-election in Dothill on 28 March 2013, following the death of Lesley Street (Con) on 29 December 2012. The result was UKIP 303, Lab 151, Con 108, Lib Dem 90.
The make-up of the town council is now Lab 8, Con 7, Lib Dem 3, Independent 2, UKIP 1.
The results in the Dothill ward of Telford and Wrekin Borough Council were as follows:
3 May 2007 – Lib Dem 521, Con 297, Lab 147
5 May 2011 – Lib Dem 404, Con 311, Lab 260

Here is some background to the by-elections in the Harwich East and Harwich West wards of Harwich Town Council in the District of Tendring in Essex.
Harwich Town Council comprises 16 members, elected from four wards as follows – Harwich East (4), Harwich East Central (4), Harwich West (4) and Harwich West Central (4).
The town wards are coterminous with the district wards of the same name.
Although I downloaded the Declarations of Result of Poll in 2007, the files have become corrupted – so I do not have the detailed voting figures for 2007.
The council strengths were:
Elections on 3 May 2007: Community Representatives Party 8, Lab 5, Con 4 The Annual Meeting in 2007 elected a town mayor from Labour and a deputy mayor from the Community Representatives Party.
Elections on 5 May 2011: Lab 10, Con 6.
Following the by-election on 10 May 2012: Lab 11, Con 5.
The current town mayor and deputy mayor are Labour.
The result in Harwich East on 3 May 2007 was Community Representatives Party 3, Lab 1
The result in Harwich East on 5 May 2011 was: Lab 441/323/322/287, Con 273/191, Independent 164/136, Community Representatives Party 141 Elected: Lab 4
The result in Harwich West on 3 May 2007 was Lab 2, Community Representatives Party 1, Con 1
The result in Harwich West on 5 May 2011 was: Con 719/611, Lab 688/564/556/485, Community Representatives Party 298/256, Independent 265 Elected: Con 2, Lab 2
Maria Fowler (Lab) won the by-election in Harwich West Central on 10 May 2012, caused by the resignation of Colleen O’Neill (Con), citing personal reasons.
Charlie Powell (Lab) held the by-election in Harwich East on 28 March 2013, following the resignation of Marilyn Gibbins (Lab), after moving to Braintree for her job as an office manager. She had been elected in 2011 as Marilyn Morrison. Labour held the seat, but the full voting figures are not yet available.
Pam Morrison (Lab) held the by-election in Harwich West on 28 March 2013, following the death of Les Double (Lab), who was also the Tendring District councilor for Harwich West. The result was Lab 282, Con 220, Community Representatives Party 163, Lib Dem 143.
The make-up of the town council remains Lab 11, Con 5.
The results in the Harwich East ward of Tendring District Council were as follows:
