He topped the poll in Bruce Castle. The old (pre-2002) Bruce Grove ward was represented by Bernie Grant so has a bit of a history of electing cunts (although I think this ward bears more relationship to the old Park ward of that vintage)

Spokesman for CAGE, I see, that being Moazzam Begg's bunch of apologists for murderous thugs acting in (their version of) the name of Allah. Shouldn't that have been a red light to any mainstream political party?

I should clarify perhaps that my slightly disparaging comments were directed solely at Bernie Grant (as well of course as the new councillor under discussion here) and not anyone else who may or may not have represented the area previously..

Well, when your religion holds jews in extreme contempt, you have to be extremely disciplined not to make such remarks, and that degree of discipline is hard to sustain.

His comments sound more like taking criticism of Israel too far than they sound like repeating some of the antisemitic parts of the Quran or Hadith. Remember that, for most Muslims, Islam is more about the practices than it is about the doctrine.

Remember that, for most Muslims, Islam is more about the practices than it is about the doctrine. It's all part of the theology. It is very very hard for a muslim to accept Jewish "occupation" (as they see it) of land that was once under muslim rule, regardless of international rulings to the contrary. Add to that the enmity between Mohammed and the Jews and you have a difficult situation.

Arent they meant to treat people "of the book" reasonably. As opposed to how they treat atheists. Saudi Arabia claims that to be an atheist is terrorism.

Practice varies somewhat, but as Jews are almost totally absent from most muslim countries, it's not put to the test very often.

There are Quran verses and Hadith which teach that (for a certain definition of "reasonably"), and others which are extremely anti-Semitic. None of the Islamic holy texts mention atheists, since there weren't any identifiable atheists in 7th century Arabia (it was just Jews, Christians, Pagans, and Muslims).

I've never read religious texts other than the New Testament (which I have an odd interest in as an atheist - particularly in the textual variants of ancient scripts, and in the synoptic problem / priority of the gospels).

Christopher Marlowe was accused of being an atheist in the lead up to his death. In those days a charge almost as dangerous as being accused of being a spy.
