A Yorkshire councillor who posted a photoshopped image of Jeremy Corbyn holding a poppy wreath at the scene of the Liverpool bomb attack has agreed to pay the former Labour leader "substantial damages".

Councillor Paul Nickerson, a Conservative who sits on East Riding of Yorkshire Council, initially claimed the image had been posted onto his Twitter account by a friend with access to his account but has now accepted "full responsibility" for the message.

Mr Corbyn is donating the damages he has received to a number of different charities, including one in Liverpool.

A statement from Coun Nickerson, who has been suspended from the Conservative group on the council as a result of the tweet, said: "On November 15 2021 a defamatory tweet, for which I accept full responsibility, was published on my Twitter account.

"The tweet targeted Jeremy Corbyn and included a fake photograph of him laying a poppy wreath at the site of a burning taxi outside the Liverpool Women's Hospital where a terror attack had taken place on Remembrance Sunday killing a suicide bomber and injuring others.

"The false photograph, captioned by the word 'unsurprisingly', gave the completely untrue impression that Jeremy Corbyn supports terrorist violence including suicide bombings, which without any hesitation I wholly accept he does not.

"Without reservation I fully withdraw any suggestion or inference that Jeremy Corbyn is a supporter of terrorist violence.

"The tweet was wrong and I retract it.

"I unreservedly and sincerely apologise to Mr Corbyn for the hurt and distress that has been caused to him by the tweet.

"I entirely accept that the posting of the message the day after Remembrance Sunday aggravated the hurtful nature of the defamatory tweet.

"Accordingly, I have agreed to pay Mr Corbyn substantial damages, which he is donating to charity, and his legal costs."

If only he had suggested that Corbyn was responsible for Jimmy Saville escaping justice, he would have been fine!

Yes, sounds like she's consistently broken group standing orders and is effectively a loose canon. With the numbers being so tight on the council their group discipline is particularly important so I would imagine there's little appetite to indulge anyone who's going to piss around and ignore the rules of the group etc.

He put out tweets directly comparing pro-trans campaigners, and by implication trans people as a whole, to the Nazis. Of course he will remain the Conservative candidate on the ballot paper

Expected. This blew up yesterday. It started with his boyfriend inverting the trans pride flag to create a swastika. He came under pressure from the Twitter mob to condemn his boyfriend, something I was concerned about tbh. He started off slightly distancing himself from his bf's comments, but in the aftermath he doubled down and took his boyfriend's side. I'm not sure whether he really agrees, or felt a drive to defend the man he presumably loves. It's an uncomfortable situation all round.

so far, it's just a reprimand and not an administrative suspension, in all cases. They are fortunate it's only gone that far at this stage. I think the QC concerned may live round the corner from me.

it's a bit more than the usual. She has shared something denying the Holocaust & saying that we should have listened to Hitler, which is higher up the antisemitism scale than we usually see in the Labour Party. She has also shared a lot of Spanish-language antisemitic stuff on social media
