For those who otherwise retain the whip in their council group.

We have one on Hyndburn Council. Patrick McGinley was elected as a Conservative but suspended from the party in December 2020 and now sits as an Independent.

Paul Nickerson cllr for Minster and Woodmansey ward on Yorkshire East Riding Council has been suspended from the local Conservative group after having his twitter hacked to post the oddly specific post showing Jeremy Corbyn laying a wreath at the burning car in the recent Liverpool Women's Hospital attack (anything to declare Strontium Dog?) pending investigation, into whether he's possibly telling porkies or not I guess?

Well I'm not sure what I have to do with it. But I think it's ridiculous that he's been suspended over what is just a quite funny joke, albeit one in bad taste.

Many lawyers, I reckon, would have been happy to defend Nickerson in court in a libel action against Corbyn

If obviously satirical photoshops are now going to be considered libellous... well. I'm very disappointed with this capitulation.

Presumably the "substantial damages" are either not that substantial or he wealthy enough that it isn't an issue for him. Probably capitulated in order to try and get restored to the Tory group in the coming months.

He owns a digital marketing company, so I feel it's probably better for his bottomline for that to get out of the news pretty soon.

The lawyers would sensibly assert that Corbyn could be made to look petty, humourless and vulnerable if he went to court, and might lose. And the defendant might well be unlucky and hit with heavy damages and large joint legal costs? So they agreed a compromise of much lesser legal costs and quite small sum in compensation with a fulsome apology.

Looks like the Lib Dems do have an equivalent to administrative suspension.

Beat me to it. Suspended by the association but remains as group leader.
How long for is another matter. Especially if the ex-Tory independents decide they want to rejoin the group and Patrick Nicholson decides he fancies another stint as leader.
