The are 17 further by-elections on 06 May in additions to those in London, Metropolitan Boroughs, English Unitary Authorities and District Councils. There are 6 County Council by-elections in England where the main elections were deferred until 2022 pending local government reorganisation, 10 in Wales and 1 in Scotland. Conservatives, Labour and Independents each defend 4 seats, Liberal Democrats 2 whilst Plaid Cymru, SNP and a localist defend 1 seat.

Of the 363 seats, 242 ( 67%) of the vacancies arose from the resignation of the previous Councillor, including 24 (7%) after being elected as an MP, whilst 113 (31%) have been due to a death and 8 (2%) following a disqualification, although sometimes a resignation occurs shortly before what would have been a disqualification.
Normally some 30% of all seats change hands during the course of a year, suggesting around 110 of these 363 seats would. However at the time of the annual May elections the statistics suggest this proportion is usually lower and may even be around 20%, indicating somewhere near 75 this year. However, these are not normal times with more like 14 months worth of by-elections occurring on a single day.
