Andrew Mackinlay, yes. In addition to him there's one more current councillor who had service before 1986 - Steve Penneck of Sutton was first elected in a March 1983 byelection and served until 1994, then taking a 20 year break before returning to the council. Elengorn, Penneck and Rea are the last to be elected as Liberals before the merger. The last to serve as an SDP councillor left office some years ago. Speaking of which, how many people elected to the GLC still hold elective office of some kind? After the retirement of Tony Arbour I can only think of two, but there are probably others.

Several in the House of Lords. There are three MPs - Edward Leigh (Gainsborough), John McDonnell (Hayes and Harlington) and Bob Neill (Bromley and Chislehurst). But also in elected office, there's Lewis Herbert (Leader of Cambridge City Council).

I suppose I should have guessed there would be a couple of Tory MPs who met those criteria, but I'd never have guessed Leigh would have been one of them. Not the profile of a candidate for Richmond any more, even a Tory one.

Lots of pre-merger Liberal/SDP councillors who are serving as Lib Dem councillors now (and one or two under other banners now).

Regret to report the death of John Pierce, a prominent Labour Tower Hamlets councillor who just turned 40 this month. He was chair of the Strategic Development Committee (the main planning committee) for many years. He represented Weavers ward in Bethnal Green from 2012.

A rather odd approach. "I can do more to influence council policy by not being a councillor . . ." (I paraphrase) Was something strange happening with the nominations in Spelthorne in 2019, some form of informal electoral pact? Staines ward was 3 Con vs 2 Green and 1 Lab plus 1 UKIP. In other wards the Lib Dems stood and Greens did not or 2 LD, 1 Lab and no Green. Wonder whether that will hold this time?

The customary response to which is to point out the cost of an unnecessary by-election.

I'm reminded of former South Tyneside councillor Allen Branley, who managed to fall foul of the six-month non-attendance rule twice (once in 1993, the second time in 2009). On the second occasion he stood for re-election in the resulting by-election and won.
