Some observations upon that line of reasoning. Is this very ancient or associated with such matters as 'The Enclosures'? Taken in from what? Surely all agricultural land was 'taken in' to cultivation from woodland, scrub or moor at some time, so why the special term for these particular plots? My understanding is that the term dates from the seventeenth/ eighteenth centuries primarily though probably continuing into the nineteenth- so a function of the rapid population increase of those years which forced people to start cultivating land not previously considered worth it. In other words the same pressures that induced enclosure of open fields, but more a feature of the highland zone whereas enclosure of open fields was primarily a lowland phenomenon, but obviously a lot of overlap between the two. Of course a lot of land had been taken in from the wild from the neolithic revolution onwards but that process had I think generally slowed in the late medieval years (post Black Death?) Our posts crossed, and I think your description is pretty accurate. The early population expansion coming from industrialisation along the Pennine valleys pushed many to take in land to cultivate that would not have ever been considered worth cultivating previously. Intake may have referred specifically to land that had been moorland.

On the Isle of Man you have "Intacks".
In manorial rolls from the start of the C16th half the land mass was held on tenancies (terminable without notice by the farmer but not terminable by the Lord) by individual farmers. This land was notionally divided into named Treens which in turn was divided into "Quarterlands" (theoretically four per Treen, actually two to six or so) each of which was a substantial farm usually held by a single family.
The rest of the land mass was "waste" i.e. what the Manx call "the mountain" and in England would be called moorland. These days it is mostly grazed by sheep and you can walk freely over it. There were, and usually are, no habitations on it Intacks were bits of the waste enclosed and used for crofting, usually with a small cottage built (most now abandoned). My ancestors scratched a living from an intack in Kirk Braddan. It's now part of quite a prosperous farm.

In parts of N England you also get "Unthank" which is IIRC similar in etymology.

Surely all agricultural land was 'taken in' to cultivation from woodland, scrub or moor at some time, so why the special term for these particular plots? Intake is a very local term, found AFAIK just in your neck of the woods, possibly just the Pennine edges of West Riding (which obviously included parts of what is now South Yorkshire). I suspect it will have had a very specific meaning which may now be lost, but could have been based on its size, i.e. a small area of land taken in from the open land and presumably then enclosed for agricultural use (in Anglo Saxon times all open land was known as the feld which has given us the word field, which originally was a large tract of open land, and was not an agricultural term until much later). The Yorkshire and Lancashire Pennines are particularly rich in these types of local terms, many of which will have had meanings that can now only be surmised. We have a similar local term here in N.E. Somerset which is 'innox', which is found quite frequently here around Bath and south to Frome and the Wiltshire borders, but AFAIK not anywhere else. I haven't found out its exact meaning but may well have referred to something akin to an intake (but I don't know what the 'nox' part derives from). I had wondered about the term Innox - the first place I saw it was in Trowbridge (where they're redeveloping "Innox Mills" near the town centre) but as you say there's one in Frome too. Looking into it, apparently it comes from "enox" which is a traditional word in the local dialect for a field near a farmstead - so definitely a similar origin.

I had come across intakes as a concept as a general student of historical geography, and I think the concept and indeed the word is more widespread than some of you seem to think, though I was also aware as some of you have ably demonstrated, the word has many local dialect variants.

Cllr Daniel Barwell (Lab, Wheatley Hills & Intake, Doncaster) has now resigned as a councillor so there will indeed be a by-election.

Slightly surprisingly Labour are not contesting any of the 4 by-elections on 10th March:
Herefordshire is Con and 2 x Ind The 2 Hitchin contests are both LD, Con, Grn and CPA Rutland is Con vs Grn.

Labour agreeing to stand down in a place like Hitchin is very, very highly unlikely. As Tony Otim said, my bet would be nominations cock up I mean they’re both very middle class parts of Hitchin: Con-LD marginals with little Labour presence. That said, yes, I also suspect a cock-up here.

We have been expecting this since about November. We are well prepared and will be fighting this one seriously. First ever Dorset Council by election incidentially.
