The only vacancies in Somerset that come under the six month rule are for the county council.

It is therefore possible the list of 33 impending by-elections could be reduced to 18 or a few more.

My understanding is:
1. The South Somerset vacancy does not fall under the six-month rule.
2. Renfrewshire Council have indicated no.
3. It seems unlikely that by-elections will be called for these vacancies now, but this possibility cannot be ruled out at this stage.
4. By-elections could be called for any of these vacancies before May. On previous experience I would expect a few of these to be called for March.

I'm sure it's a complete coincidence that this has happened now. However from the previous article, I noted that she was only non-disqualified because she had attended *virtual* meetings since May.
I pointed out to a helpful local journalist that Council's hadn't been allowed to meet virtually since May 7th. North Northants Council position was that the meetings (a Cabinet Advisory Group) weren't covered by the Local Government Act 1972 because reasons, but that these meetings did count for the six-month attendance rule, because other reasons.

To me that was about as convincing as Downing Street's latest "It wasn't a party" defence and I suggested the journalist might be able to get a bigger story out of it, potentially a Council bending the legal attendance rule - a few days later she has gone. Would be interested in the legal eagles view on here, as to whether the Council's position was more defensible than it looked to me.

The Council's position looks extremely shaky to me.

Section 85 is the relevant provision and reading it now I can't see they have a sound argument.

They appear to have used "Panels" to avoid the requirement of a "Committee" to meet physically in public while claiming that said "Panel" qualifies as a "Committee" for the provisions of Sn.85. That's my take anyway.

Can I ask why Vaynor in Merthyr Tydfil has not been subject to the six month rule?
