Which would also explain how traditional Jewish burial practices are similar.

The classic case where a practice adopted for reasonable secular reasons is taken over by religious authorities, becomes adopted/assumed to be a religious requirement, and is insisted upon even now when the secular reasons for doing so have ceased to exist.

Her Facebook post states that it wasn't her intention to seek re-election. That's really strange. Why not just resign the whip and sit as an Independent? I assume it's the NIMBY issue which she fell out with her party about?

I suppose it helps if there is something you can lay it on to. Tibetan sky burials ( the vultures eat you then the bones are crushed) is practical as there's no soil for burial but also fits in to Buddhist ideas about reincarnation

19 August also sees the re-run of the Wiltshire PCC election. I am not sure whether you classify this as a "local government" by-election?

Councillor Alan Wedderkopp, LD, Wilton and Sherford ( Somerset West and Taunton council) and Comeytrowe and Trull ( Somerset County Council) died on Friday. A Question for Davıd Boothroyd . We are expecting an announcement on whether Somerset will go to 1 unitary or 2 unitaries or remain two tier this week. If Either Unitary proposal goes forward, with elections for a new authority/ new authorities being held in May 2022, will by elections be held for these two vacancies as normal before the six month rule kicks in or is there a provision that they won’t be in that circumstance?

No regulations have yet been produced for Somerset, but normally when authorities are being reorganised, the six month rule applies prior to the date of the reorganisation. Local government reorganisation always takes place on 1 April because that is the beginning of a new local government year. So if Somerset is to be reorganised, the earliest it can happen is 1 April 2022 (and that may be cramming it in early - might want to delay to 1 April 2023). Given the six month rule works on the basis of the date the vacancy occurred, I don't think a vacancy occurring in July 2021 could be caught by a retrospective rule over reorganisation.

Is West Suffolk missing someone? I ask because the page listing the composition of the council states that as of today (July 20th) the composition is Con 40, Ind 18, Lab 4, Non Grouped Independents 1, Vacancies 1 but going through the list of councillors I cannot see any gaps (all wards have the correct number of councillors for that ward) www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/Council/Councillors_and_meetings/councillorsandmps.cfm

And now part of the Independent group.
