Sensible yes, but also an odd place to suddenly start splitting wards. The wards covers parts of both Rhos and Esclusham Communities but it doesn't cover part of Esclusham proper (a Wrexham suburb). There's not much lost in excluding it wholly from Wrexham. (Or you can exclude Esclusham itself as well, as the LD proposal does. You'll only be following the current boundary.)

Today is the last day for contributions to the second part of the Commission's inquiry following its initial recommendations and the last public inquiry is being held in Aberystwyth. I shall be present at 5.30pm this afternoon and there is a live webinar of the proceedings via Zoom, the details of which can be found on the Commission's Twitter feed.

In attendance at the evening session was myself, a statement from Fay Roberts MP (Con, Brecon and Radnorshire) and Nia Griffith MP (Lab, Llanelli).
First was the statement from Mrs. Roberts who said that placing Neath in Brecon and Radnor was the most wonderful thing to happen and should have happened a very long time ago, especially considering the UK government's investment in the intergrated rail network scheme in Neath. Next was me, summarising the recommendations I have made across Wales with particular focus on the ceremonial counties of Powys and Dyfed, with Mrs. Griffith finishing the session stating that she belives that the Llangunnor ward should be moved from the proposed Llanelli seat to the proposed Carmarthen seat.
Following the close of submissions this evening (0001 BST), in the autumn (the person I spoke to hoped October but couldn't firm on that date) all the transcripts of the public meetings, all the submissions and a revised set of proposals will be published based on those submissions. That will then trigger another 4 week review so that by no later than the end of June 2023, a formal set of boundaries will be passed to Parliament for the Government to lay in council.

It's up.
That Rhondda though.

It's up. That Rhondda though. It didn't sink in when I looked at the summary map - at first I assumed it was just the area obviously labelled 27 which looked reasonably fine. It wasn't until I saw the detailed map that I realised it included the unlabelled territory to the south west as well! In all seriousness though - the only connection between the two parts of the constituency is a farm track! And it's not even like Pencoed has that much demographically in common with the Rhondda either; the two were both dependent on coal mining historically but now their fortunes have diverged significantly. There's no community of interest and no decent connection - clearly a case of the least worst option but a really horrible one by any standard.

Some utterly hilarious comments from the public, credit to the boundary commission for publishing them all in full.

This is map is a completely indefensible joke. I don't think there's much point in being respectful to the Commissioners, it's a professional disgrace.

Woke up for my middle aged early morning wee and now Rhondda is keeping me awake like a nightmare.

I thought the original Ystradgynlais exclave was bad. But the Ruabon one is now terrible - and as for Pencoed....wtf!

But apart from that they have done a much better job of most other constituencies as far as I can see

Rhondda is near the minimum so if you simply added Brynna ward to it (3616 electors), I'm not saying the comms would be any better but it would look less horrible on the map, and Pontypridd would still be quorate.

There is the occasional further change at this stage, but they are always small, and require a storm of protest.

There is the occasional further change at this stage, but they are always small, and require a storm of protest. Well, quite. I'm just suggesting a way of restoring a modicum of sanity without disrupting the whole plan.

Why "Aberavon Porthcawl" and not "Aberavon & Porthcawl"?

There is the occasional further change at this stage, but they are always small, and require a storm of protest. Certainly at local level, comments of ‘go back to your draft proposals’ are often taken seriously as the boundary commission has already said they think it’s a good idea. Don’t know if it will be true at national level as well. That Rhondda is a piece of art isn’t it? I can see angry psephologists making a pilgrimage to that bottleneck to see it for themselves.
