More troubles here - I'm not unhappy with Liverpool but this version of St Helens N is not exactly a thing of beauty.
I've taken the liberty of rejigging the seats in Sefton but only to show an alternative to the current arrangement. In practice I'm sure the existing seats will be waved through. Southport - 71037 Crosby - 69865 Bootle - 75414 Liverpool Central - 70382 Liverpool Toxteth - 72750 Liverpool Garston - 70742 Liverpool West Derby - 75830 Liverpool Walton and Kirkby - 75311 Huyton and Halewood - 70126 St Helens North - 76983 St Helens South and Prescot - 76827 Birkenhead and Wallasey - 75320 Bebington - 69819 Heswall and Hoylake - 76312 Ellesmere Port - 71027
That version of Liverpool is nice (though I'd probably swap Old Swan for Princes Park.) But that version of St Helens is a strong argument in favour of the proposition that you should use it as a connector between Lancashire and Cheshire, so you can sort Greater Manchester on its own.

Greater Manchester - there are some real problems here and it needs a lot more work but everything is legal. It's actually possible to divide Manchester into 5 seats without ward splits (to my amazement) but unfortunately it gave rise to problems elsewhere that I was unable to solve.
Wigan - 75607 Makerfield - 75069 Leigh - 76747 Westhoughton - 73149 Bolton - 76589 Farnworth - 75629 Salford - 71012
Eccles and Davyhulme - 73843 Stretford and Sale - 73385 Altrincham and Urmston - 74185 Manchester Wythenshawe - 74587 Manchester Withington - 72328 Manchester Moss Side - 70692 Manchester Gorton - 74364 Manchester Blackley - 74209 Radcliffe - 70793 Bury - 75652 Middleton and Prestwich - 74419 Heywood and Royton - 72260 Rochdale - 72290 Oldham East - 72997 Oldham West and Droylesden - 75032 Ashton under Lyne and Stalybridge - 71134 Denton and Hyde - 72657 Stockport - 74769 Hazel Grove - 72941 Cheadle - 73775
Nice gerrymander in Altrincham and Sale. I'm sure the residents of Hale Barns are going to love being in Manchester Wythensawe. Shame cos its pretty good outside the Trafford borough area. Could you not get Sale Moor into Wythenshawe instead? Yes, Sale Moor would work but then Flixton would switch into the Stretford seat, leaving Urmston rather isolated at the northen end of the Altrincham seat. Besides, I thought it was high time Sale was united in one seat.
A simpler swap would be to put Village ward into Wythenshawe instead of Hale Barns.

Obviously may not fly if you need to use bits of GM to fix Cheshire, but I've got a simple solution for Bury, Salford, Bolton and Wigan: Bury North (75652) - gains Unsworth Bury South (76935) - gains Darcy Lever & Little Lever Salford (71567) - loses Eccles, Swinton and Swinton Park, gains Broughton and Kersal Worsley & Eccles (76306) - gains Eccles, Swinton and Swinton Park, loses Walkden and Little Hulton) Bolton South & Walkden (76199) - compared to Bolton SE, gains Walkden and Little Hulton, loses Darcy Lever & Little Lever and Great Lever Bolton North East (76808) - gains Great Lever Bolton West (73149) - unchanged Wigan (75607) - unchanged Makerfield (75069) - loses Hindley and Hindley Green, gains Lowton Leigh (76747) - gains Hindley and Hindley Green, loses Lowton Finally got round to actually posting the map of this, because I'm going to keep on banging the drum for treating GM on its own, and using St Helens to launder electors between Lancashire and Cheshire:

I suspect the balance of opinion in Little Lever will not be happy at being moved out of a Bolton seat, but personally I've no problem with the idea.

I'm stealing it immediately.
With Stockport standing alone for 3 seats, that leaves 14 seats for the remaining six GM boroughs and you've inspired me to come up with a scheme that does that - I'll post it in a moment. So the good news is that there's no need to cross the GM-Cheshire boundary.
And the even better news is that with a bit of ward-shuffling St Helens is able to absorb the effects of lending a ward to Warrington, meaning there's also no need to cross into Lancashire proper.

Here's the updated plan, incorporating EAL's proposals.
Seats and numbers are as per EAL's post just upthread for the four boroughs he covered, with everything else as in my earlier posts except for the following:
Knutsford - 73549. Now with Marbury ward from W Cheshire and with no Manchester element. Warrington South - 73893. Warrington North - 70315. With Newton ward from St Helens. St Helens - 74344. Much more compact and sensible than in my previous plan. Prescot - 69898. This seat and the previous one could be called 'St Helens N' and 'St Helens S and Prescot' if preferred.
Stretford and Urmston - 73212. Altrincham and Sale - 74468. Manchester Wythenshawe and Hale - 76437. As Pete Whitehead says, this probably won't be received with transports of delight, but it allows everything else to fit and it's definitely better than cutting Sale in half as the current map does. Manchester Withington - 72254. Manchester Moss Side - 71100. Manchester Gorton - 75977. Or possibly Ardwick. I couldn't find a way to keep Piccadilly and Deansgate wards in the same seat. Manchester Blackley - 74087. Failsworth and Droylesden - 72082. Includes Moston ward from Manchester. Oldham West and Middleton - 73949. This keeps all three Chadderton wards together, which my previous scheme failed to do. It also gets rid of the clumsy (although precedented) linkage of Middleton and Prestwich.

However, it now cuts Altrincham in half, instead. (The Hale Central and Bowdon borders both reach right into the town centre.)

What worries me more, and I should have spotted this before posting, is that the Failsworth seat extends into three boroughs. I've actually got a solution for this, but it ain't pretty (although it does get the two Manchester central wards in the same seat). I may post it if I can't think of anything better.

All a little overcomplicated, I think. Altrincham & Sale West and Wythenshawe & Sale West can both stay unchanged, and whilst arguably they've been divided long enough, realistically no change in Trafford is needed, so no change will be what we'll get. Not keen on your centre of Manchester, the tri-borough seat or double-crossing the Rochdale-Oldham boundary. This is a plan which which existed in an immanent form as a critique of andrewteale and ricmk's efforts, but which I haven't presented as a map until now. What do you think? Rochdale 72134 Heywood & Middleton 72967 Oldham E & Saddleworth 72728 Oldham W & Royton 73667 Blackley & Oldham S 76587 Manchester Central 70786 Manchester Moss Side 70692 Denton & Gorton 74306 Ashton-under-Lyne 72278 Stalybridge & Hyde 73028 Hazel Grove 72941 Cheadle 73775 Stockport 74769 Manchester Withington 71614 Stretford & Urmston 73212 Wythenshawe & Sale E 76971 Altrincham & Sale W 73934 Four seats unchanged, plus two which only change by a single ward and several more with relatively minor alterations. Central Manchester works nicely. Against that, Denton & Gorton and Blackley & Oldham S are less than ideal and it would have been nice to have one less boundary crossing in Manchester.

That area of Wythenshaw and Trafford is the same as is now covered by the three seats Stretforf & Urmston, Altrincham & Sale West and Wythenshawe & Sale East. All those seats are in quota so there's absolutely no case for such a radical redrawing there

I don;t know if this will work. I like this plan but not sure on the effects elsewhere. For all the talk of taking a ward from GM I've added one (Culcheth etc). I think you can then add both Newton wards to 'Cheshire' and make that work per the plans others have published and I think Lancashire can take up the slack as it has small enough wards in many areas to be able to finesse the average electorate upwards or downwards as necessary 1 Oldham 74202 Yes 2 Rochdale 71442 Yes 3 Littleborough & Saddleworth 72505 Yes 4 Heywood & Middleton 73632 Yes 5 Ashton Under Lyne 76381 Yes 6 Stalybridge & Hyde 73028 Yes 7 Manchester Gorton 77019 Yes 8 Manchester Blackley 76435 Yes 9 Manchester Ancoats (other names available) 72819 Yes 10 Stretford & Urmston 73212 Yes 11 Altrincham & Sale West 73934 Yes 12 Wythenshawe & Sale East 76971 Yes 13 Manchester Withington 71614 Yes 14 Manchester Rusholme 70397 Yes 15 Stockport 74769 Yes 16 Cheadle 73775 Yes 17 Hazel Grove 72941 Yes 18 Bury 75652 Yes 19 Prestwich & Radcliffe 76935 Yes 20 Salford 72169 Yes 21 Eccles & Worsley 76915 Yes 22 Bolton East 76773 Yes 23 Farnworth 76234 Yes 24 Bolton West 73149 Yes 25 Leigh 76331 Yes 26 Wigan 75607 Yes 27 Makerfield 74400 Yes

Well, it's a first draft. Stockport (entitlement 3.02, allocation 3) CHEADLE (73775) - unchanged HAZEL GROVE (72941) - gains Manor from Stockport STOCKPORT (74769) - loses Manor to Hazel Grove, gains Reddish from Denton and Reddish Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside and Trafford (entitlement 13.96, allocation 14) This worked out surprisingly easily. OLDHAM EAST AND SADDLEWORTH (72997) - unchanged ROCHDALE (71697) - loses Spotland and Falinge ward to Heywood and Middleton. HEYWOOD AND ROYTON (72853) - successor to Heywood and Middleton. Gains Spotland from Rochdale and the Royton wards from Oldham West and Royton, loses the four Middleton wards. OLDHAM WEST (73746) - loses Royton to Heywood and Royton, gains Failsworth from Ashton-under-Lyne. BLACKLEY AND MIDDLETON (75653) - the four Middleton wards and the four northernmost wards of Manchester. MANCHESTER CENTRAL (72819) - Ancoats, Ardwick, Cheetham, Deansgate, Hulme, Moss Side, Piccadilly. MANCHESTER EAST (75220) - Clayton, Gorton, Miles Platting, Moston, and Audenshaw and Droylsden from Tameside. ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE AND STALYBRIDGE (71134) - the four Ashton wards, the two Stalybridge wards, Dukinfield Stalybridge and Mossley. Reorienting the Tameside seats avoided having to split one of the main towns in the borough. DENTON AND HYDE (72657) - the three Denton wards, the three Hyde wards, Dukinfield and Longdendale. MANCHESTER RUSHOLME (70397) - successor to Gorton. Gains Burnage from Withington, loses Gorton and Abbey Hey to Manchester East. MANCHESTER WITHINGTON (71614) - loses Burnage to Manchester Gorton, realigns to new wards STRETFORD AND URMSTON (73212) - unchanged ALTRINCHAM AND SALE WEST (73934) - unchanged WYTHENSHAWE AND SALE EAST (76971) - unchanged Bury, Bolton, Wigan and Salford (10.27 quotas, allocation 10) As you will see, it was a struggle to fit this in. The main issue is that the present Leigh constituency is only just outside tolerance and there are very limited options for redrawing it. BURY (75652) - The current Bury North plus Unsworth; as per the last Boundary Commission recommendations PRESTWICH AND SWINTON (76618) - Whitefield and Prestwich from Bury, and Swinton, Pendlebury and Broughton from Salford. SALFORD AND ECCLES (75017) - Includes Kersal and now all of Eccles. WORSLEY (75262) - Worsley, Irlam, Cadishead, Walkden, Tyldesley and Astley Mosley Common LEIGH (76833) - Regains Atherton from Bolton West, loses Astley Mosley Common and Tyldesley, gains Little Hulton. Yes, this is contiguous. Splitting Little Hulton off Walkden was the only way I could see to keep this seat in tolerance. FARNWORTH AND RADCLIFFE (76235) - As per the last Boundary Commission recommendations. BOLTON NORTH EAST (75897) - Gains Great Lever and Rumworth, loses Astley Bridge. BOLTON WEST (72518) - Gains Astley Bridge, loses Atherton. MAKERFIELD (74400) - Unchanged. WIGAN (75607) - Unchanged. I also found a solution allocating 7 seats to Bury, Bolton and Salford, leaving Wigan to be combined with Warrington; but that was far uglier. There's an alternate arrangement for Manchester and Tameside which doesn't require reorienting the Tameside seats: - The Trafford, Rochdale and Oldham seats as Andrew has them
- Manchester Central: Cheetham, Deansgate, Piccadilly, Ancoats, Clayton, Miles Platting, Moston
- Ashton under Lyme: The existing seat less Failsworth, plus Audenshaw and Dukinfield
- Stalybridge & Hyde: unchanged
- Denton & Gorton: The three Denton wards, Gorton, Longsight, Levenshulme and Burnage
- Manchester Moss Side: Hulme, Ardwick, Moss Side, Rusholme, Fallowfield, Whalley Range
- Manchester Withington: Relative to the current seat, loses Burnage
Denton & Gorton is an awkward shape, but everything else is extremely neat. It has to be said that this scheme, subject to EAL's tweaks above and his redesign of the four boroughs (Bolton, Bury, Salford, Wigan), is pretty hard to beat.
I still don't like the split of Sale but both current seats are within range so I imagine they'll survive unchanged as Andrew has them here.

Joining the plaudits for East Anglian Lefty west MCR configuration. Wythenshawe and Hale or Altrincham is never going to fly given the option to stand still so I would suggest against relying on that. I’m sure it’ll be suggested but there would be a big campaign against. Interesting new east MCR map posted by EAL looks like a rotation of 6 north wards. Only crosses Rochdale boundary once (good) but how strong is that Rochdale seat? If it’s no good then not worth the Blackley / Oldham S seat which ain’t pretty.

I agree with your doubts about Oldham S & Blackley - I prefer Andrew's original idea of putting Middleton in a north Manchester seat. This leaves Heywood to be joined to Royton plus one ward from the existing Rochdale seat (Andrew had Spotland - I'd suggest Balderstone).
I don't see a problem with Gorton & Denton. There's a perfectly good road, and Gorton is pretty central to the seat as a whole.

Thanks for pointing out the issue with Newton-le-Willows, but I'd suggest resolving it by taking Bold ward instead. A bit of rejigging still gives two workable seats from the rest of St Helens plus the Prescot wards from Knowsley, so there's no need to trespass into Lancs proper.

I'm not wild about Middleton & Blackley, because Hopwood Hall is a mixture of bits of Heywood and bits of Middleton. But I have to admit that it's probably preferable to a seat stretching from Crumpsall almost to the centre of Oldham.
