The Labour candidate did better than he or I expected, but as I said before it may have had little to do with her Labour label as such- but having been the parliamentary candidate may have been a factor.

Respectable 2nd place for Coilla Drake there. 17% on first preferences is the sort of numbers that could get her elected in 2022 once the second prefs come in. Would probably need either Clackson or Sinclair standing down to make it possible though.

If I got the result a bit wrong (underestimated Woodbridge, though I thought she'd win comfortably, overestimated Stevens) my excuse is that I don't know the north islands all that well, though I'm fairly familiar with the Orcadian Mainland. The only one of the north islands I've spent some time on, doing archaeological fieldwork, is Rousay. My eldest son has however lived for a while on Sanday. Otherwise the nearest contact to these remotish islands is passing by them on the ferry to Shetland.

Might give her a good start in a 3-member STV election though.

Most important thing is that an election actually happened and the sky hasn't fallen in. It is an absolute disgrace that we are not allowed to have by-elections in England. An ever-growing number of residents are being denied proper local representation for no good reason. But also on a practical level, surely it would be a sensible idea to use by-elections as a series of test events for covid-secure / social distant polling stations rather than waiting until May find out if it's possible or not?

The last point especially is a good one, and that may be why Wales plans to hold some by-elections before May.

Single breed show (so much less waiting around for other people/dogs to get through the ring first), smaller attendance and larger venue than normal. Perfect opportunity to try out the various covid protocols in a controlled way before trying anything much larger (like Crufts) and it worked brilliantly.

Unfortunately, this is a level of logic that is missing from the UK government.

There is a good case for a series of by elections being run in different areas, ranging from the very rural to the large city, as a pilot scheme with sutiable measures tried out. What is becoming especially concerning is that some councils, I know of Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole and Mid Devon for a certainty, are actually changing control on the basis of vacancies that can not be filled, which really is quite outrageous. Not to mention all the people whose work depends on election, such as printers, whose jobs are being put at risk by this cowardly action by an anti-democratic government.
