Aberavon β seeing as the historic town was completely demolished by the municipal philistines, it would be better to call it Port Talbot these days Aberconwy β this was a rubbish name for a district running the entire length of the Conwy Valley, and it is still a rubbish name for a constituency; it should just be called Conwy Alyn and Deeside β East Flintshire, please; I could live with Tegeingl East if we want to go all historic with the names, but the 1974 district name is rubbish Blaenau Gwent β doesn't even contain the top of all of the Gwent Valleys; should just be Ebbw Vale Carmarthen East and Dinefwr β should just be East Carmarthenshire; we don't need constituencies named after National Trust properties Clwyd West β not even the westernmost constituency in Clwyd; not sure what would be better thoughDelyn β West Flintshire, cf Alyn and Deeside Preseli Pembrokeshire β more 1974 district madness; should be North Pembrokeshire Ynys MΓ΄n β perfectly fine Welsh name (and I would support naming all Welsh constituencies bilingually), but people who don't speak Welsh should call it Anglesey rather than coming up with "Innis Monn" or some other mispronunciation Colwyn Bay. The Clwyd West constituency is likely to disappear in the next review anyway.

Looks like Pembrokeshire also throws up the irritating 2x sets of compass points, Camarthen West and South Pembs. It would be nice to continue with my National Park idea, but I assume Pembrokeshire Coast wouldn't do because the coast is split between the two? At least Tatton isn't actually a NT property, so it abides by your rule

Same goes for the Oldhams... Before I get accused of hypocrisy re. Bury South, both the Oldhams do include Oldham proper, and Royton (which is also smaller than Chadderton which didn't get the limelight)/ Saddleworth would gravitate towards Oldham anyway, so like the Hackneys, their addition to the names is just superfluous. LOL, that is seriously pitchforky. I meant in terms of commuting, amenities, etc! Socioeconomically different, I agree! I know there is the parochial Yorkshire business going on there but do significant numbers of Saddleworth people actually still commute to Huddersfield instead of Manchester?

All the constituencies which are officially called Compass-Point County but which are almost universally colloquially called County Compass-Point should be officially named as County Compass-Point. All the constituencies in Plymouth, Southampton and Brighton should be renamed with simple compass-point names instead of the weird names they have. Ludlow should be renamed Shropshire South OR Ludlow & Bridgnorth (because it is a large rural constituency with lots of small villages, OR because the two main towns are about the same population as each other and it is wrong for one to predominate) Constituencies which are officially called A and B should be renamed A & B. The word "and" should indicate that one is referring to two constituencies, and the "&" means one.

The Clwyd West constituency is likely to disappear in the next review anyway. For a constituency that includes Ruthin? Really, no. The problem is that it really doesn't make much sense as a constituency β Ruthin should be in Vale of Clwyd, and then at least part of Rhyl should be joined westward. But for what it's worth, I don't think it's likely to disappear β the really undersized Clwyd constituencies are Clwyd South and Wrexham, and they adjoin one another β playing it as straight as possible on the current numbers gives something like this:

'East Yorkshire' is surely one of the worst named constituencies in the UK. The name implies it covers the eastern section (or all) of the East Riding of Yorkshire but it actually covers the northern half. I would rename it 'Bridlington and Wolds'

At least Tatton isn't actually a NT property, so it abides by your rule CWSP should really be West Carmarthenshire and South Pembrokeshire, but as johnloony points out, metropolitan media types can't get county constituency names right anyway (perhaps we should rename the metropolitan ones to Wembley, Willesden, Hackney Stoke Newington, Hackney Shoreditch, Islington Finsbury, Islington Holloway, and so on, so that only county constituencies use compass points and no idiot will try putting the compass points after the name). But in that case, bloody districts again. It's a mouthful, but it makes sense as a constituency. But that one really is doomed anyway!

Now that the number of constituencies in Liverpool and Glasgow (etc) are substantially fewer than they were decades ago, they should be replaced by compass-point names. The names of constituencies in the London Boroughs should tend more towards being based on the borough name - I agree with what has already been said about Hackney and Islington. For example, Bromley should have Bromley South, Bromley West, Bromley North instead of Orpington, Beckenham, Chiselhurst. Southwark North & Bermondsey should be Southwark North (because Bermondsey is already part of the borough of Southwark). The constituencies in the predominantly Welsh-speaking parts of Wales should have two equally valid alternative names - e.g. MΓ΄n/ Anglesey, Meirionydd/Merioneth - so that both language communities can be comfortable using whichever one they prefer. (Similarly Western Isles).

I've never supported any "one size fits all" policy towards constituency names.
The Hackneys work because the other elements are additional to the main Hackney elements. Just having "Hackney Compass Point" excludes anything added to the Borough which could be misleading to voters. By and large the constituency name should always reflect the composition, so the extent is clear to both electoral administrators and voters.
As we all know, the Commissions over the years have worked more towards a patchwork of rules and regulations rather than anything fixed, so of course down the years nothing has really quite stuck. Sometimes the Commission has been fond of using historic names of Hundreds and wapentakes, sometimes they are swayed by local pressure on mentioning towns, and of course some names go back hundreds of years and the strength of traditions wins out.
Reducing constituency names to just one town amongst many seems like a backward step to me. It removes something distinct about our parliamentary system I think.
Let's talk about cities. Interesting that Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham have retained their community names while Leeds and Bradford have not. Decisions made decades ago set a kind of precedent. There is little chance of persuading politicians and the Commission that Wavertree, Riverside, and West Derby should be replaced with compass point names. They'll look at precedent. I do take the point made earlier about how the centre of a named constituency may no longer reflect that name, and perhaps new names should be added rather than historic names be removed.
I have always preferred longer names. Accuracy is key. Set rules constraining the Commission to hard and fixed regulations is not the best way to deal with the very different landscape of rural England, urban England, Wales etc.

Iβd love for one of Richmond (Yorks) and Richmond Park to be renamed. It drives me crazy. Richmond and Northallerton would be greatly preferable. Northallerton is bigger and is the county town.

Again I must plead or the abolition of "North Tyneside". It's only half the borough of that name, the other half being Tynemouth. And it's commonly, and completely wrongly, referred to, even in quite august publications, as "Tyneside North".
Alternatives would be "Wallsend" or "Longbenton" or both.

Now moving across the border:
Birmingham Hodge Hill β where on earth is Hodge Hill?! I'm sure it's a made-up place that no-one actually lives in. The constituency should be called something like Birmingham Saltley or Birmingham Ward End Cannock Chase β this should just be Cannock South Staffordshire β this should be Seisdon; they missed an opportunity for a good obscure hundred name for a bunch of non-descript commuter villages Staffordshire Moorlands β this should obviously be called Leek Stoke-on-Trent North, Central, and South β should be Stoke-on-Trent Burslem, Hanley, and Longton Warley β better known as Smethwick West Bromwich East β drop the East West Bromwich West β call it Wednesbury The Wrekin β I mean, honestly, naming a constituency after a mountain? Call it Wellington Wyre Forest β if it can't be called Bewdley, it should at least be called Kidderminster

Glasgow already has compass point names. Also, if consistency is the aim, what do you do with Manchester, which will have 5? Manchester north? (Blackley.) Ok. Manchester central? same as now. Manchester south? (Wythenshawe.) Ok. However, the other two? Manchester south central? Manchester south south central? Manchester even more south central? Manchester south (north) ? Doesn't work for me. "City - district" names create inconsistencies, but inconsistencies are one of the entertaining quirks of the system.

Now moving across the border: Stoke-on-Trent North, Central, and South β should be Stoke-on-Trent Burslem, Hanley, and Longton You can ditch the Stoke-on-Trent bit altogether and just go with the six towns. North: Burslem and Tunstall. Central: Hanley and Stoke-upon-Trent South: Fenton and Longton.* (*Just Longton would raise serious pitchforks. If you don't know why, read Arnold Bennett.)

Aberconwy β this was a rubbish name for a district running the entire length of the Conwy Valley, and it is still a rubbish name for a constituency; it should just be called Conwy Which isn't even the largest town in the constituency.

I don't think size of settlement should be the main factor in constituency names, it should be based on historical significance and where is well known outside of the area. So Wantage instead of Didcot, Sedgefield instead of Newton Aycliffe, and Wells instead of Street or Burnham.
