I have actually sometimes thought I'd make a good Rabbi, certainly better than my cousin. Unfortunately, a lack of belief in God makes that pretty difficult. Perfect for the Church of England then.

Would you really be that likely to hear Welsh spoken at the livestock market? The area of Wales across the border is strongly English-speaking surely. We attend the Oswestry Show most years. There is a lot of Welsh spoken there. I wouldn't go so far as saying 50-50, but maybe 75-25 in the livestock rings. And very soon, when the pubs reopen in England, Oswestry is going to become a majority Welsh-speaking town.

That born in Wales figure is interesting, although not surprising. I haven't noticed you give that statistic on other English constituencies, do you have a list of them? Oswestry area residents using Wrexham Maelor hospital? I think it is easier to get to Shrewsbury for most Oswestry area people, apart from maybe some villages around Gobowen. I don't really know what sort of purview an orthopaedic hospital has, but maybe births happen at the Oswestry hospital too? On the flipside, I would be interested to see the proportion of English born in Montgomeryshire. Shrewsbury is the go-to hospital for the Welshpool area.

"That born in Wales figure is interesting, although not surprising. It comes into the category of 'variables occasionally referenced at extreme end'! I don't have a list as such, it's taken from the 2011 Census for constituencies. Someone with more skills than I with an Excel file might be able to extract and generate such a list.

Orthopaedics will not do births - unless the mother has complex bone fractures! Has there been a recent stramash about maternity services at Shrewsbury? That might explain people opting for Wrexham. EDIT. There has. The Ockendon Review. Quotes at least 12 women and 40 babies who died in what has been described as "the largest maternity scandal in NHS history". Googling Shrewsbury Maternity Scandal produces 156,000 results. Said to have lasted "decades".

Not enough time to have any major impact on the stats I would have thought.

Not enough time to have any major impact on the stats I would have thought. That was my initial thought, but knowing the power of "word of mouth". "Our Sandra went to Shrewsbury; wouldn't go again. They say Wrexham's much better."Just a thought. Or maybe it's just a lot of cross-border house moves.
