I will add at the 2004 count (my Dad was one of the Lib Dem candidates in Shard End - a paper campaign of one leaflet), the delegation for the JFK / PJP and some Asian Indie candidates in Washwood Heath were large and security had to evict some out of the NIA!

While the divisions in the Muslim community are largely impenetrable to outsiders, an important issue was the succession to Roy Hattersley in 1997. The Small Heath seat had been abolished as Birmingham lost a seat, and 2 of its 3 wards had been linked with 2 of the Ladywood wards in a new seat. Unfortunately the Ladywood MP Clare Short was a senior figure in Labour, but would have lost a selection battle to the Small Heath MP Roger Godsiff because of the influence of the GMWU union. Labour therefore ruthlessly gerrymandered the selection for the new Sparkbrook and Small Heath seat to ensure that Godsiff got it, and Short was left in Ladywood. Local Muslim figures who had expected to have a fair selection in the new seat to Hattersley, which would probably have led to the first Muslim MP were outraged, and this was the origin of the JFK/PJP. They weren’t an unreasonable bunch, and I actually voted for the PJP at the 2003 elections, following the Iraq invasion. This was very interesting in itself, as there were large numbers of partisans in the street outside the polling station, canvassing those who arrived to vote. But as a middle-aged white man I was totally ignored..... There were lots of issues, the de-selection of Raghib Ahsan before the 1998 locals was another, as were various other failed attempts to gain selection, the 2000 selections farce, the 2002 essay competition, all gave the JFK/PJP a boost. But yes, it all kicked off around 95/96 when I was down in Kings Norton. Large partisan crowds of Kashmiri males outside key polling stations who are only interested in voters from their community is nothing unusual you know? 20-30 outside St Christophers, Springfield was perfectly normal, same for several other polling stations, 50-60 and scuffles outside Conway School. Many older white voters, especially women, find it very intimidating. 2003 Sparkhill was glorious, only time as agent I've ever had too many helpers.

John Chanin / iainbhx thank you for the background re: PJP / JFK. As for being a white voter of them, my Grandad lent them one of his three votes in Soho in 2004 (the other two went to the 1st and 3rd placed Labour candidates). Had Sybil farted near him then? They has some white voters, but they didn't really campaign to get any. Salma made the same mistake in 2010 or rather left it too late.

Haha I guess he must have not noticed her at the end of the ballot paper! I just don't think he felt she was a good councillor, but he's not here to defend him or explain himself. I think their target was the Kashmiri community, and their literature was more geared to issues that affected them and what their community wanted. I did come across one of their leaflets in Soho and one in a Handsworth ward in 2003 that my crazy auntie went ape about (she has some really strange views) and my Mum told her to shove an x in the Labour box and shut up!

There are however many Muslims who are more afraid than average to come out as gay. There's bound to be a hidden number in this statistic for many if not most areas.

I believe the Solihull Wards of Smith's Wood and Castle Bromwich will be included in this constituency.
