I seem to remember that that was forced on the local government commission as the 1973 Act made no provision for a county to contain no districts or only one district. It's strange that you remember the 1973 Act but have forgotten the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011 You mean Clegg's Sordid Little Compromise. The reason my blue recyling bin was overful for several weeks in 2011?

Bringing this over here... Would there be an argument for the Isle of Wight having specific local circumstances to justify it being a two-member Parliamentary seat? Any way of slicing the island in two is going to cause a run on pitchforks. Why? The zombie review didn't seem to cause particular controversy in the Isle of Wight. It is no different to various cities that are the size of two seats and are split in two. In trying to find a map of the old district councils, I came across various discussions of Zombie One from the time where there was a solid divide between "verticalists" (a West seat and an East seat) and "horizontalists" (a North (effectively urban) seat and a South seat). With the wisdom of Solomon, I'd impose a doughnut.

Prior to 1995, when the current unitary authority was created, there were two districts, Medina and South Wight, the former containing Newport, Cowes and Ryde, the other covering the rural hinterland plus Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor. They weren't equal in population - Medina was about 30% bigger than South Wight - but it could be a basis for negotiation. What an absolute beauty: [

Are we allowed to have "Hell, Hull and Halifax" in this thread? Officially called Yorkshire & the Humber, this constituency actually exists for Euro elections.

I hate to break it to you, but actually, it doesn't anymore... lol you're right, Brexit completely slipped my mind when I wrote that. Which goes to show something about both the UK's and the European Parliament's relevancy to Europe I suppose.

Binned proposals for Cornwall, 1946 & 1966:- Who knew at the time that Truro & Falmouth would eventually make a comeback in 2010? Then again, Wadebridge & Newquay connect better with Launceston than they do to Bodmin, and Liskeard and Saltash connect better to Bodmin likewise. No wonder this scheme was scrapped.

A 1994 proposal covering Kirklees and Wakefield:- I concede that this scheme has a pro-Tory bias (we proposed it) but such a shame that Denby Dale CC never made it off the blocks. Also Mirfield sits well within Spen Valley and Wakefield is united.
