Are there even any actual concrete proposals? Four of them... Being discussed in this thread, but 1. Whole county unitary. Supported by the County Council, predictably enough. 2. "West Cumbria" (Allerdale, Copeland, Carlisle) and "East Cumbria" (Eden, South Lakeland, Barrow). Supported by Allerdale and Copeland. 3. "North Cumbria" (Allerdale, Carlisle, Eden) and "South Cumbria" (South Lakeland, Barrow, Copeland). Supported by Carlisle and Eden. 4. "The Bay" (Barrow, South Lakeland, Lancaster) and "North Cumbria" (Copeland, Allerdale, Carlisle, Eden). Supported by Barrow and South Lakeland (and Lancaster). |

You could call it "Cumberland and the Barony of Westmorland" The old boundary between the Barony of Kendal and the Barony of Westmorland is broadly similar to the Eden / South Lakeland boundary. |

Why not unite Askam, Ireleth, Grange, Ulverston, North Lonsdale, Dalton-in-Furness, Barrow-in-Furness, Bolton-le-Sands, Lancaster and Morecambe and call it the Hundred of Lonsdale? Because people might think calling it a 'Hundred' means it has 100 councillors, so they'll complain about there being too many politicians? Or perhaps they'll confuse it with a city-based tournament that's just not cricket? |
