The Salisburys through the 19th and first half of the 20th century. I think 4 successive generations made it to the Cabinet (and, of course, one extremely important prime minister, still lauded by many Tories). One generation was skipped (the very conservative 6th Marquess, though he was an MP). Then his son made it into Cabinet and is still around. Quite recently, John Gummer’s son, Ben, was the youngest member of Theresa May’s Cabinet. Was he in the Cabinet or just attending?

Who was it who described the 9th Earl de la Warr as 'that absurd creature'?

Leo Amery. Though I disagree with him as anyone who built the De La Warr Pavilion is obviously someone of good taste.

He wasn't a full member en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_May_ministryI was using this from Wikipedia: “Gummer served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich from 2010 to 2017. A member of the Conservative Party, he became Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General in the First May ministry in 2016, entering the cabinet as its youngest member.” However, re-reading it, I see he’s not a Privy Councillor, so your Wikipedia is more accurate than my Wikipedia.

Lord Sedwill, whose peerage was announced in June last year and formally created on 11 September last year, will take his seat on 21 October. His 57th birthday.

The first post on the Lords for more than three months. Since Tony Greaves' death we don't seem to have any contacts who know what is happening in the second chamber - or maybe because of the summer holidays nothing much has happened?

We do have a lord, but he doesn't post much in this thread. There has been a couple of retirements, Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorne (Conservative) and Lord (Jeremy) Beecham (Labour) retired in September, and Lord David Puttnam (Labour) used the Shirley Williams Memorial Lecture to announce his intended retirement in October (https://www.davidputtnam.com/viewNews/n/lord-puttnam-retirement-full-speech/). There’s been one new Peer (not including new Bishops): www.heraldscotland.com/politics/19647007.millionaire-tory-donor-malcolm-offord-takes-seat-house-lords/There will be a hereditary peers by-election on 15 November following the death of Viscount Simon (Labour). This is an open election amongst all registered hereditaries.

I'm pretty sure there was a record set yesterday. There were 14 divisions and 14 government defeats in the House of Lords, most of them being Peers' refusal to accept government amendments adding new powers to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

Seb Coe has retired from the Lords effective today. Do we know why? I'm not sure but he had taken leave of absence in any case, and his contributions had been confined to sport related issues only for quite some time.

I can’t see how electing the Lords would “help restore trust in politics” when you look at the utter dross people elect to the Commons. Wasn’t most of this “loss of trust” caused by elected politicians in the first place??
